Our Mt Hood

My husband is from Lima, Peru, and had never been on skis before Super Bowl Sunday, 2009. In fact, he had rarely seen any snow. We went to Mt Hood Meadows for a new experience. We started slow on the bunny hill and Buttercup chair, and after half the day, it seemed my Peruvian was ready for the Vista Express chair. If only there hadn’t been that bit of ice at the beginning, I may have created a real ski bum. Instead I got the death glare and comments like, “I’m never doing this again.” It wasn’t pretty, and it took quite awhile to conquer that ice. Then we called it a day. Luckily the beauty of the mountain won him over, and we will try it again this year. Can’t wait for snow! —Kristin Collantes

I love Mount Hood because of its sheer grandeur! It is an amazing part of our Northwest landscape that we often take for granted! Mount Hood is such a beautiful place any time of year, however, the best memory I have is spending a weekend there in the winter—during the holiday. It was absolutely magical: the snow, the fireplace, and the sleigh ride made me feel like I was in some sort of holiday special you’d see on TV. It was awesome. Mount Hood is an essential part of all us Northwesterners’ lives, whether we know it or not. It helps keep our water clean and our weather just the way we like it. It provides an endless array of outdoor activities, from camping, to hiking, to boating, to snow sports. Portland literally wouldn’t be the great place it is without our sleeping little volcano. My husband and I recently stayed in Welches for our 35th anniversary. We’ve breezed through the area on our way from Bend to Portland, but had never really taken time to explore the beauty of the Mount Hood area. And explore we did: hiking at Timberline, Mirror Lake, Little Zigzag Falls, Salmon River, Laurel Hill. We enjoyed a lovely anniversary dinner at the Rendezvous Grill & Tap Room. The weather was perfect and the scenery gorgeous. We realized again how lucky we are to be (relatively new) Oregon residents. And we’ll never rush through the Mount Hood area again! —Marie Bernardy

We were lucky enough to own a cabin for just one year, until we were forced to sell at a loss when my husband lost his job last Christmas. That year, though, was full of so many great memories with family and friends. Our two small children loved to go hiking in the woods, and play in the snow, and my husband loved golfing with friends at the Resort. Not a day goes by that we don’t think about that year when we could escape from our worries and stress. Now, we aren’t in a position to take trips, as my husband is still looking for work, but we would love to be able to visit again, particularly the Resort, as it’s got such fantastic amenities and is close to everything. —Elizabeth Meffen
