All mobility levels can traverse the mostly flat bike/pedestrian paths and bridges of the Eastbank Esplanade Waterfront Loop, making the promenade in the heart of Portland a family-friendly place for walking, biking, skating, stroller-pushing, and wheelchair-rolling. Short detours to explore the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry or enjoy a hot toddy at RiverPlace Hotel.
ROUTE: From the eastside parking lot, walk up the pedestrian/bicycle ramp and cross the Willamette on the Hawthorne Bridge’s wide sidewalk. Descend the sidewalk ramp on the west end of the bridge and follow to the path along the seawall of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Turn left (north) and follow the path approx. 1 mile to the Steel Bridge bike/pedestrian crossing. Cross over the river and turn right, following the Eastbank Esplanade over the floating walkway back to parking.
DIRECTIONS: If driving, head for the northeastern corner of the Hawthorne Bridge, where restrooms and parking are plentiful. Or bicycle, walk or ride the bus to join up with the loop at any point.
