BIG IDEA Yearn (but struggle) to achieve? Consider "goal-tracking with teeth," a Portland start-up’s idea for spurring good habits (and making a buck off failure). Beeminder is simple: A user sets a goal. Beeminder creates a chart of daily or weekly benchmarks. To miss the mark once is free; the second time, Beeminder charges the user five dollars. After that, the penalties can escalate to $270 per infraction. "Once you get past $30, it works very well," says Daniel Reeves, who launched the site in October with his wife, Bethany Soule. So far, 4,300 users have experimented with this stick-sans-carrot motivational method. beeminder.com

WORKSHOP Marisa Howard‘s jewelry line Seaworthy draws on natural inspirations. The "Zand" earrings evoke moss she saw on a Mojave expedition. "Being from Oregon, I’m obsessed with moss," the 32-year-old designer says. "I didn’t expect it in the desert." seaworthypdx.com

BAND OF THE MINUTE As summer nears its close, it’s time for a night out with a raucous rock band. Sons of Huns’ vigorous, melodic rages recall both the British Invasion and classic Northwest punk. Live at Kelly’s Olympian, Aug 31
