Clean and serene, the master bath is the ultimate urban retreat for this busy power couple.

Before the Weedmans renovated the space, the hot tub room was a strange offshoot to the bedroom. Sweltering in the summer and freezing in the winter, it closed off the bedroom behind frosted glass windows and the double glass doors at the top of the stairs. And the tub itself (shown here at the top of the stairs behind the flowering plant) was rarely used.

Dark and depressing—as well as outdated—the master bath was was lit through bubble glass windows that Arielle calls "a true mark of the 80s."

The bedroom before was a vivid blue mishmash of poor planning, small choppy spaces, and a closet that was literally falling apart.

The new master bath is a light, bright, and airy oasis to which the family can escape after a long day. The husband wanted a basic glass shower, outfitted with only a simple Hansgrohe showerhead. A small mirror set into the shower wall is outfitted with a heat element so he can see himself shave without the mirror getting steamed up, and a window lets in light but is at head-height for privacy.

The Pratt and Larsen floor tile (in Linen Blend #2) is a warm gray and brown surface that slides right into the birch countertops and Pietra Serena limestone countertops. To keep surfaces seamless, the medicine cabinets are hidden behind the mirror on either side and open with a touch of the hand. Electrical outlets are hidden under the cabinets, and the lights are recessed so there’s no need for trim.

While the husband wanted a simple shower, the wife wished for an indulgent soaking tub. A waterfall filler by Hansgrohe makes it seem even more spa-like (and is mirrored in the sink filler). A small inset shelf holds soaps, candles, and shampoo.

"Many people want a separate room for the toilet for more privacy," says Arielle. A wall-mounted option by Duravit saves on space, as do sliding doors finished with satin-edged glass to let in light.

His and hers closets are a far cry from the previous iterations of ramshackle shelving falling off its tracks, and they’re easily accessible off the bathroom instead of taking up bedroom floor space.

Where there used to be a solid wall is now an open view to the outdoors from the bedroom through oversized windows. A giant 22-foot steel beam overhead provides structural support, but is encased in sheet rock and painted the same gray as the walls to make it seem sleek, not unwieldy. Double French doors allow access onto the deck and additional views to the trees outside where before there was only a wall.

Cast concrete stairs are softened by a lush carpet that is so thick "you want to lie down on it," says Arielle. Wood strips between the floor treads further make the space feel cosy, not cool.

Floor to ceiling windows that used to sit alongside the hot tub now provide expansive views to outside for the bedroom. UV film coating helps keep the space from getting too hot, while letting in lots of light and maintaining a lofty, open sense of the new master suite.
