Cuisines: Chinese

Those extra-spicy noodles you pick up at the Thai joint down the street don’t hold a firecracker to the five-alarm flavors at Lucky Strike—a real-deal Sichuan-style eatery in Southeast Portland. Co-owner Rita You re-creates the home cooking of her youth in China, from preserved black duck eggs, sliced and served cold in a spicy garlic soy sauce, to ma-po tofu made with ground beef, fermented bean paste, and mouth-numbing peppercorns. The signature hot-pepper chicken bath can leave your hair parted on the opposite side. Most of the chiles come straight from China, and the kitchen doesn’t cater to the timid. Calm the palatal burn with the slow-cooked Guinness pork ribs, shellacked in a sticky-sweet soy sauce.
