This bakery has it all: the cool backstory (humble beginnings and handpie cult following at the farmers market), the transformation into one of the city's essential bakeries, and even a gorgeous cookbook co-authored by Portland legend Cory Schreiber. Did we mention some kicking pies? The coconut cream is worth the trip alone: a mountain of perfectly creamy custard, just sweet enough, under a blizzard of toasted coconut in wondrous, buttery crust. Cakes are old-fashioned magical (and perfect to take home for parties), and while some pastries are better than others the standoutsare from the sweet shop of heaven, including the addictive chocolate shortbread cookies and the Katie Bun, a magnificent hybrid of a croissant and a cinnamon bun. With a big counter up front and café tables for lounging, Baker & Spice doubles as the Hillsdale community center and nursery school.
