From the fluorescent lights in the waiting room to the high-pitched whir of the drill, that twice-yearly visit to the dentist typically isn’t an event that people look forward to. So why not ease your nerves a bit by putting yourself in the capable, latex-gloved hands of a dentist who comes highly recommended by his or her peers? For this year’s list, Portland Monthly teamed up with the national survey company topDentists, which polled more than 1,400 Portland-area dental professionals in general dentistry and seven additional specialties. First, topDentists assembled a comprehensive list of area dentists with the help of the American Dental Association and several Oregon dental societies. Then, they distributed to each practicing dentist a ballot that was specially tailored to include the names of other practitioners in the same geographic area. Each participant was asked to rate all the dentists whose work they were familiar with on a scale of 1 to 5. (And lest you think that anyone voted for himself, general dentists were asked to vote only for specialists, and specialists only for general dentists.) Once we verified that their licenses were active and in good standing, those dentists with the highest average ratings were selected for our list. The result? One hundred and sixty-six top Portland dentists who will keep you smiling.
