Washington Park Summer Festival
Over the course of 10 consecutive days, perhaps the best outdoor venue in town, the Washington Park Rose Garden Amphitheater, plays stage to a diverse cornucopia of artists. It kicks off with the energetic Portland Gay Men’s Chorus before switching to the much more old-fashioned but no less smoldering Verdi opera Otello, starring a cast of national opera stars. In the classical vein, there’s also the Portland Festival Symphony on August 4, but there are popular bands, too, such as Black Prairie (August 6) and Vagabond Opera (August 7). There’s a tribute to a recently passed legend, the West African artist Obo Addy (August 5), and an introduction to a new international star, the award-winning Malaysian performer (and recent Portland transplant) Sean Ghazi (August 8). In other words, there’s something for everyone, if you just stop and smell the roses.
