The Sea and the Mother
Vietnam-born musician and author Dao Strom's music for her band The Sea and the Mother was influenced by her love of musicians like Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and others growing up, as well as by her Vietnamese writer-parents. Her latest work, We Were Meant to be a Gentle People, is a hybrid music-literary project, composed partly in the tradition of "ca dao", the sung-poetry of Vietnamese culture. Also performing will be Portland-based Beneath Wind and Waves. Chris Estey, writing for the website decoymusic.com, calls Shawn Lawson Freeman's music with Beneath Wind and Waves "glistening [and] elegant" and says, "Dark love, missed chances, inner silences, and joyful trials are delicately delineated in its shrewdly scribed lyrics, delivered with Freeman’s sweetly pleasuring vocals upon a classy bed of acoustic and electronic instrumentation."
