Showing as part of the 36th Portland International Film Festival. An Australian comedy drama about a struggling female Aboriginal country-western group, set in 1968 in a remote outback town. The group faces racism and musical obscurity, but gets their break in the form of talent scout Dave, played by Chris O'Dowd (
Bridesmaids, The IT Crowd) who changes their musical track from country to Motown and dubs them The Sapphires. Dave sends the four women to Vietnam to sing for American troops, a trip which proves to be the beginning of these young women's journey to find adventure and success. The great Motown tunes the singers belt out and mix of humor, tension and the incredible fact that the movie is based on screenwriter Tony Briggs' own family history makes
The Sapphires a sure bet. Also showing Feb. 10 at Cinemagic.
