Nearly three years after the release of the guitar-driven
American Gong, Quasi make a rare New Year's Eve appearance for the hometown crowd. It's difficult to believe that it was 20 years ago that Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss, then husband and wife, recorded their first cassette. By the release of 1998's
Featuring "Birds," the duo had perfected the wave-meets-shore crash of drums and Rock-Si-Chord (electronic harpsichord), only to start again with a guitar-and-drums psychedelic sound in the 2000s. Stealing away moments of their busy schedules (Coomes with Crock, Blues Goblins; Weiss with Wild Flag, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks), the duo has returned to the basement and is hard at work on a new album that, according to the band, will "come out sometime after it's done." Something to look forward to after the glimmer of NYE has faded!
