Kon Tiki is the Norwegian nominee for this year's Best Foreign Language Oscar, and is part of the Portland International Film Festival. It was the most expensive movie ever produced in Norway and earned more than $14 million opening weekend in its native country, a box office record there, shortly after which The Weinstein Company acquired distribution rights for North America, the UK, and Italy.
Kon Tiki is a historical adventure drama that follows Norweigan ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl on his 1947 trans-Pacific Ocean journey on a self-made balsa raft from Peru to Polynesia, which he successfully undertakes in an effort to prove that the Polynesian Islands were settled by South Americans in a similar way in prehistoric times. Also showing at Regal Lloyd Center 2/19.
