This year's Czech submission for Best Foreign Language Oscar (though it did not make the shortlist); showing as part of the Portland International Film Festival.
In the Shadow is set in 1950s Communist-era Prague, and examines the investigations of Czech State Security into a jewelry robbery, a case which is soon interrupted by an East German State police agent, who follows a lead that points to the thieves being Jewish immigrants with a goal of funneling money to a U.S.-backed Zionist operation. The film has been praised for its successful noir styling and for its scathing portrayal of a very disturbing political and social time and place. Also showing 2/9 at Regal Lloyd Center and 2/16 at Cinema 21.
