It's the third year for this classical music festival, with more than 30 concerts and other events, many of them free, held March 7-23 at various venues around the city. This year the
Moderne celebrates the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring", the would-be 100th birthday of Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski, and the 55th birth year of internationally renowned Finnish composer, devotee of Stravinsky and Lutoslawski, and current Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonia, Esa-Pekka Salonen. The festival will open on March's First Thursday with a free celebration at Polish Hall in NoPo, with free musical performances, film clips, free food and drink, and a panel discussion featuring local music writers from the
Oregonian, the
Willamette Week, and
Oregon Music News, and composer David Schiff of Reed College. (Did we mention that that's all free? Wow, what a night!)
