Cabin in the Sky
Presented as part of the Portland Black Film Festival. Cabin in the Sky originally premiered as a musical on Broadway in 1940 that ran for nearly a year. The movie version was released in 1943, starring Ethel Waters and Lena Horne and featuring the music of (and cameos by) Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" sung by Ethel Waters. It was one of the first films to star an all African-American cast and tells the story of Little Joe, who was killed over his gambling debts, but who receives a chance to make amends with his wife and redeem his soul instead of being condemned to hell.
