The mission of the seven-year-old Build Local Alliance (BLA) is to "improve the vitality of local forests and related human communities by connecting local, responsibly grown and processed wood with local projects." Their northwest Oregon and southwest Washington-based members include forest owners, millwrights, retailers and distributors, designers, architects, craftsmen, and many other individuals who are interested in developing local economy through sustainable forestry. One of the BLA's well-known recent collaborations was with the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. The BLA's Spring Showcase will highlight the building materials ash and cottonwood, and speakers will include James Ray Arnold, who recently completed the first Living Building Challenge home in Portland, Larry Baker of Larry Baker Logging, Robert Wortman of Heartfelt Woodworks, and Glenn Ahrens from OSU Forestry Extension, who will share successful examples of using local wood in local projects.
