Christian Petzold (
The Lives of Others) won the Best Director prize at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival for his new film
Barbara. Set in 1980s East Germany, the drama tells the story of Barbara, a Berlin doctor who is sent out of the city to live in the countryside after she applies for an exit visa. She expects to be rescued by her lover who lives in the West, and intends to quietly count down the days until they are reunited, but she finds herself falling in love with a co-worker, all the while suspicious he could be a spy. Caught between the two very different futures she must chose from, we follow Barbara's story as she meditates on her options and arrives at her choice.
