Eat Outside: P-Town Picnic

Council Crest

At the top of SW Council Crest Drive or Marquam trailhead on SW Terwilliger Boulevard
Sometimes, you want to feel like you earned that ham-and-brie sandwich. A three-mile hike up the Marquam Trail means climbing more than 1,000 feet to the West Side’s iconic promontory and its clear-day visual buffet of snowcapped Cascades peaks. Please, feel justified in packing that second pie slice. You’ll burn it off on the descent.

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

SE 28th Avenue & Woodstock Boulevard
Not that these nine-plus acres of floral glory in deep Southeast aren’t worth the $3 admission charge, but … pack in dinner after 6 p.m., when entry is free. The tranquil ponds and lush landscaping evoke Japan; the occasional beaver sighting is all Oregon.

Peninsula Park

700 N Rosa Parks Way
Dining among roses is a simple act of Portland patriotism; following the crowd is not. So leave overtrafficked Washington Park to the masses and spread a blanket among the 65 varieties abloom in North Portland’s elegant formal garden. With a New Seasons six blocks west, stocking the basket shouldn’t be a problem.

Skidmore Bluffs

At the west end of N Skidmore Court
This semi-renegade parkland mere blocks from popular sunset-peeping spot Overlook Park attracts throngs of youthful bohemians with its rustic atmosphere and staggering views. Bring your own ineffable cool; stop at nearby Mississippi Avenue’s Pastaworks for anything edible you might require.

House for Summer, Hoyt Arboretum

4000 SW Fairview Blvd
Far away from the busy parts of Washington Park is a fitting place for a pagan ritual, a make-out session, or just a great picnic: artist Helen Lessick’s public artwork House for Summer. Planted in 1987, it comprises 15 Himilayan birch trees trained into the shape of a house. Bring a stick to chase away the gnomes.

Sleek, intimate tables, couches, and a see-through railing frame an awe-inspiring view of the city. But don’t let the LA-chic scene fool you. Chef Gregory Gourdet’s Asian fusion cuisine is surprisingly unpretentious: from the pork belly (with pickled cherries and ginger) to wok-fired golden curry. With most dishes under $15, this could become your home away from home.

RADIO ROOM

Get there early to stake out your people-watching perch on the small rooftop or post up around the fire pit in the courtyard below. When it’s hot, cool down with something from the noir-themed cocktail menu before moving on to the meat-heavy main dishes.

NOBLE ROT WINE BAR

Noble Rot’s spectacular fourth-floor patio (OK, so technically not rooftop, but it is roofless) pairs innovative local cuisine and a thoughtful wine list with a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline—a trifecta that’s guaranteed to add a little amour to your evening.

ON DECK SPORTS BAR

The food selection spans the narrow culinary spectrum between sliders and burgers, but they’re executed well and the drinks are all refreshing. Plus, with 26 televisions inside, you’ll never have to wonder about the latest soccer scores.

LAURELWOOD PUBLIC HOUSE & BREWERY

Climb the stairs from the back parking lot to the rooftop, where cognoscenti enjoy a full bar, umbrellas, and the same selection of great beers and comfort food as downstairs. There are no views to speak of from up here, but when you’re staring down the business end of a pint of Workhorse IPA with sunlight on your face, who cares? —MP

Stake out a spot on the wraparound deck as the sun slips below the West Hills and raise a glass of Oregon pinot (there are more than 50 on the wine list) to the passing boats and barges.

Between the living wall—a grid of plants growing amid concrete panels—excellent happy hour dishes (a wood-fired Italian sausage, caramelized onion, and fennel pollen pizza for $7, for example), and an evening-extending black marble fire pit filled with flaming stones, your “vacation” might just turn into a full-fledged sabbatical.

Which is just fine with us, since it means a little extra rump-warming room on the fireplace’s wraparound brick bench.

CASA NARANJA

Should you miss out on one of the seats surrounding the sandstone fire pit in the corner, the dozens of dangling tiki torches can light up your night, too.

A ROADSIDE ATTRACTION

1000 SE 12th Ave; 503-233-0743
Hidden behind a weatherworn wooden fence, the entrance to this funky bar and restaurant is easy to miss. The smell, however, is not: the scent of campfire emanating from Roadside’s courtyard wraps the entire block (and you) in a cloak of smoky goodness so thick that, after a pint of micro and a smoked-sausage baguette, you’ll leave with a musky souvenir of your own.

DEL INTI

Nuzzled up against Alberta Street, the patio’s cushion-covered wooden benches offer a well-padded perch for staring into the flames—or out at the equally mesmerizing street scene. —KC

But with the recent expansion of the side patio—a covered cluster of picnic tables bordered by climbing plants and maples—the wait to dig in got a little bit shorter.

IRVING STREET KITCHEN

But on weekend mornings, you’ll want a seat at one of the chunky redwood tables among the potted plants and wagon-wheel benches on the loading dock, watching the city wake up as you dive into poached eggs and lobster scrambles.

WILD ABANDON

A walk through the dimly lit dining room delivers you to a spacious, sun-drenched back patio, where a towering, Peter Pan–worthy cyprus tree grows right through the concrete. Chatter from neighborhood families provides the soundtrack in this often-lineless hidden spot, while eggs Benedict and pitch-perfect Bloody Marys provide very good reasons to grow up.

VERITABLE QUANDARY

The riverside space is still as alluring as it was then, especially for brunch, when the stone tables, wrought-iron fencing, rosebushes, and blackened catfish with poached egg combine to give your grumbling belly a memorable answer to its hunger pangs.

MUDDY’S COFFEEHOUSE

The warm welcome extends to the front yard, where a sun-dappled arbor and tiled roundtops make an ideal setting for devouring scrambles overstuffed with local ingredients. Just remember: at some point, you’ll have to go back to your house.

Waits for Tin Shed’s local, organic goodies can easily creep past an hour. Fortunately, if you miss the breakfast boat, you can sneak back (and probably find a fireside seat) for supper. —RR

AS A CITY with limited ray-baked days, we hold certain culinary truths to be self-evident. Specifically, that fresh air makes everything taste better. With that in mind, we scoured Portland in search of tasty places with thoughtful outdoor spaces as complementary to your meal as a fine, palate-pleasing wine. In other words: Places that put more effort into their outside environs than a few wobbly tables sprinkled along the sidewalk. And we found them. From front patios with fire pits to backyard gardens ripe for growing romance over brunch, Portland’s alfresco menu offers something for everyone. As our heat-soaked summer days slowly slide toward fall, your only job: Eat. It. Up.

Chewy, uncut wood-fired pizzas come in four seasonal varieties, flanked by sprightly small plates and hearty oven-roasted mains. The restored building’s red bricks take on a super-real glow as the sun sinks—an effect only enhanced by well-crafted cocktails. —Zach Dundas

Even now, hidden behind a grove of trees, the classic spot’s tranquility, and large, sun-soaked wraparound porch affords a prime place for you to soothe your own municipal woes. Order a pitcher of IPA and the famous “best reuben on the planet,” and dream of how you’d rule Portland. -MP

CARTLANDIA

8145 SE 82nd Ave.; 503-358-7873
cartlandia.com
Cart “pods” may be last year’s revolution, but this cluster, which caters to cyclist plying the Springwater Corridor and motorist refugees from 82nd, could become this year’s most happening “street” scene. A recent visit found a half-dozen carts, withmore promised by summer’s height. The standout: Cascade Burger, where a self-professed lifelong vegetarian (!) grills an excellent half-pound of beef with superb fries and house-made ketchup. A trailer loaded with a big-screen TV also makes for fine Timbers viewing. -ZD

MUDDY RUDDER PUBLIC HOUSE

So you’ll feel no guilt letting your kids (or dog) run free while you nosh on one of Muddy’s signature organic flour pizzas with pecorino cheese – pies that rival some of the best of Portland’s pizza pantheon. -MP

The large, tikied-out, palm-tree-appointed back patio at the NE Fremont location invites long lunches of Hawaiian favorites like kahlua pig and loco moco (a fried egg and hamburger patty on a bed of rice, smothered with brown gravy). A fire pit tucked in one corner awaits in case you want to let the day completely get away from you. -KC

PROST!

4237 N Mississippi Ave.; 503-954-2674
prostportland.com
From the servers’ accents to the beer steins and wood paneling, North Portland’s always-crowded beer garden ranks as the most authentic (and fun) slice of Bavaria this side of the Alps. When the sun is shining, nix the boiled bratwurst and canned sauerkraut and opt for the food carts that ring the deck. Meatball heros at Garden State, a vegan bowl of tofu and veggies from the Native Bowl, and gourmet burgers at the newly opened Burgatroyd make excellent, if somewhat untraditional, companions for your Helles. -MP

CALDERA PUBLIC HOUSE

$ 76

Twinkling white lights and Japanese lanterns line the fenced-in, fern lade patio. It’ll take some time to choose between the menu’s six organic burger options and the more creative fare (bourbon-soaked brie, anyone?). But the toughest decision? When to tear yourself away from the tranquil scene. -KC
