Here on Eat Beat, we love tooting our town’s horn when it comes to national press and awards, and this month is no exception:
First up, Esquire lays down some love for the Woodsman Tavern, hailing it as one of 2013's Best Bars in America.
Says writer David Wondrich: "The Woodsman Tavern is like a rich man's hunting lodge: rustic but not too rustic and conspicuously well stocked with the good things in life: numerous Belgian beers on tap, cask ales, well-made cocktails, raw oysters and clams, a selection of country hams, carefully chosen wines and spirits. It would almost make you tired—if it weren't all so damn good."
This isn't the first time Duane Sorenson's SE Division landmark has basked in the glow of national praise. In February, 2012 the eatery landed a spot on GQ's 10 Best New American Restaurants, and a year later boasted a spot in GQ's roundup of the country's Top 10 Whiskey Bars.
Popping across the river, Saveur focuses in on the fire behing Vitaly Paley's Imperial for a two-page guide to grilling (complete with an illustration of the SW Broadway restaurant's hearth). At the restaurant, Paley explains, "Each piece of meat, every vegetable, needs its own treatment—fundamental wisdom that can be applied to home grilling, too."
Paley continues with tips for selecting wood (a combo of hard and soft wood is best for maintaining heat and flavor), cooking tender veggies (blanch before you grill), and grilling fruit (like pineapple on the rotisserie spit). We'll link to the full story as soon as it's live online.
For the fashionable foodie, Vogue puts the slide show spotlight on three PDX destinations for a perfect night out: Saucebox, Lincoln, and the Doug Fir. According to writer Francesca Gilberti, an ideal evening in Portland begins with happy hour nosh and cocktails at Downtown's Saucebox, heads to N Williams for a few plates from Jenn Louis' kitchen (imbued with a "Portlandish air", whatever that means), and ends with a Wood Fir’d Manhattan and a show at "the hipster capital of the west coast".
Do you agree? What's on the itinerary for your perfect Portland night out? Tell us in the comments!
