Today's daily dose of Portland pride comes in the form of word from Bon Appétit magazine that our own Maurice, Davenport, and Expatriate are sitting pretty on a list of 50 nominees for the mag's annual Hot 10: America’s Best New Restaurants.
Bon App's restaurant and drinks editor Andrew Knowlton assembled the dream team after a whirlwind tour sampling hundreds of the nation’s top eateries—and, as per usual, Portland is always a major player in the conversation (Ava Gene's landed at #5 on 2013's list, and Luce was crowned #4 in 2012).
With not one but three big names in the running, odds of a three-peat are in our favor.
So sit tight, this game is about to get even more exciting: on Tuesday, August 19 the foodie mag will announce the ten new restaurants that will make the final list in the annual September Restaurant Issue.

- Kyle Linden Webster and Naomi Pomeroy's dark and sexy Northeast Portland bar Expatriate was named one of PoMo's 10 Best New Restaurants ("dancing on the edge of gritty and glamorous, high-quality and highly personal") and Best New Bars. The space and Asian-inflected menu certainly have the sex appeal to attract BA's readership, but can the husband-and-wife food and drink team make it to the top?
- Kristen Murray's downtown pastry luncheonette Maurice got the glamor-girl treatment spotlighting its sweet design and not-too-sweet desserts, and the pastry chef herself was featured in a full spread in our March issue. In July, Portland Monthly restaurant critic Karen Brooks named Maurice a majorly original spot to watch, and the chic destination is also the subject of Brooks' monthly review in our upcoming September issue, on newsstands soon—is Murray's star still on the rise?
- Under-the-radar pick Davenport has been one to watch since its opening, marking the return of former Castagna and Evoe chef Kevin Gibson and his near-obsessive dedication to sourcing and respecting the integrity of quality Northwest ingredients. Proving she's really got her thumb on the best of the best, Davenport will get the full Karen Brooks review treatment in our October issue. Back in 2013, Andrew Knowlton himself gave the minimalist chef's previous restaurant some major props: "Kevin makes me feel like I’m in some weird village in Southern France, like I’m at the whim of a mad genius." Did the restaurant editor find that kind of magic at Gibson's latest project?
