Vintage shoes get their time to shine.

It’s another week and another cool thing from Solestruck. This time the quickly growing shoe tycoon put together a rockin’ roller rink shoot giving love to their Antiquities Department (aka vintage) with local apparel from Ms. Wood, Rad Summer, Yo Vintage and Moonwoods. Basically, it looks like the coolest kids in school had a party and we wish we were invited.

See the entire lookbook here and watch the video shenanigans below.

The Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon

Longtime vintage curator, Liz Gross, opens a 50’s chic bridal salon.

Xtabay

Brides-to-Be (and friends of) take note. One of Portland’s most beloved vintage stores, Xtabay, took over the top floor of its space and turned it into a late 1950s Parisian Atelier. Owner Liz Gross has amassed nearly 100 vintage wedding gowns from the 1920s-60s, plus a handful of modern high-end couture gowns.

The collection consistently changes and grows with Gross always on the eye for a perfectly dreamy dress. She states her goal of the salon “is to provide modern brides a luxurious bridal shopping experience while offering them something unique, one of a kind, “green” and extremely affordable.” And FYI if you do find the gown you crave they provide services such as alterations, re-working and customizing. There’s even a full time seamstress on hand during the appointment for consultations.

As if the gorgeous vintage wedding gowns weren’t enough the bridal salon also sells accessories such as headpieces, veils, vintage and antique jewelry, shoes, shawls, and fabulous bridesmaid dresses. But what goes underneath all that? The shop carries the official shape wear line used on TV’s Mad Men – Rago. The 65-year-old New York based company specializes in nipping tucking and displaying everything just right for your big day.

Currently the bridal salon is by appointment only so call to set up a viewing with your bridesmaids in tow. The shop will provide the tea, coffee and champagne, but your girlies will provide the Oohs-and-Ahhs.

Not getting hitched but you still want to check it out? The bridal salon hosts it’s Open House Saturday the 10th (tomorrow) from 12-6pm. Browse the gowns and keep a mental checklist for anyone that might need a dress soon.

I have named dropped the Xtabay vintage boutique enough times it probably has a crack in it. It’s not my fault though; the selection of clothing is so well curated I cannot help but talk about it over and over (and over). Owner Liz Gross just shared some of her favorite pieces from 2010 that are sure to dazzle. Enjoy the slideshow looking back at the year that looked back on many years.

I was out in the miserable rain scouting some of my favorite indie boutiques for an upcoming fashion shoot when I wandered into the Golden Rule on East Burnside. And then I nearly tripped over a giant pile of clothes stacked high on a blanket tossed on the ground. Turns out the whole mound is the vintage fashion version of bobbing for apples with everything on the blanket given the basement bargain price tag of $5. I tore through the lot past a freaky faux fur, one stray boot and a seriously sassy sequined tunic that might have been stolen from the Golden Girls set to find myself a vintage navy Jantzen cardigan. Victory!

After I pulled my head out of the pile of inexpensive wonders I actually stopped to look around. I saw whale sketches, photographs and jewelry amongst the scarves hanging from the ceiling and small rows of vintage clothing at reasonable prices. I ran through a rack of spangles and sparkles and eyed a handful of bags with a bias to a tan briefcase style purse before remembering tis the season to buy for others. Just as I was complimenting the visual merchandising of the store, consignment specialist Melissa DeMerit dropped a serious organizational bomb on me. The store completely changes its inventory, floor lay out and décor each month to match the art displayed on the walls. I can’t even bring myself to organize my closet more than twice a decade; I am utterly impressed the retail equivalent is happening every lunar cycle. This is the perfect shop for those of us who love vintage and have short attention spans. What is that….90% of the city?

The $5 pile will be on the floor until Wednesday at 9pm for anyone wanting to take a turn at the hunting game. Once First Friday roles around each month the inventory you see in the store disappears, if you see something you want you’re best off grabbing it then and there. I am already regretting I didn’t grab the Golden Girls sweater; those crazy broads are my role models for anything to do with shoulder pads.

Runway Happiness

The Weekend in Pictures

The Flurry and Xtabay shows in visual representation.

Email

Portland is a cold, cruel world today. Not only because I flew in from Honolulu last night after a week of basking in the tropical sun with blue-green waves crashing at my feet (don’t hate me, I have been trying to squeeze in that vacation for the last 5 years), but because when I was gone I missed all kinds of fun fashion times. And I hate missing out on anything fun and fashion related. I can tell from the activity on my Facebook page that multiple events went down, but notably two fashion shows took place. The Xtabay Holiday Show with beautiful girls in vintage gowns who put on elbow length gloves and sashayed about with invisible books atop their heads. This video has left me more than a little jealous since I long for day when I can find a suitable reason to put on elbow length gloves, but alas no reason ever comes. On the opposite spectrum the slideshow contains pictures from pop up shop Flurry’s weekend show featuring 15 local designers like Betty Jean Couture and Ms. Woods. Overall the clothes look pretty dang cute, but I have to question some of the hair styling at the show. I love big hair, but once it gets above 4", it’s pretty distracting. You can pick up items from both of these shows at their respective stores. If you made it to either runway extravaganza, let us know your thoughts!

When reaching the crucial point of accessorizing during my daily routine, there is a question I am forced to ask myself. What will my jewelry be today? New? Vintage? Mr. T inspired chains? At this point I usually collapse under my own pressure and pile it all on mixing styles. For people like me, with a love of all jewelry old and new, the place to shop is Gilt. Located on bustling NW 23rd Gilt showcases a wide array of new, vintage and repurposed jewelry. Owner Paula Bixel has done a stand up job of mixing together many decades of accessories under one roof. I have seen everything from a vintage engagement ring to funky felted earrings adorn outgoing customers. For the lovers of all things old the downstairs portion has sparkly necklaces, antique brooches and rings a plenty to run your eyes over. The upstairs section of the store has lots of local love with display cases dedicated to different Portland artists offering up some of their newest creations. Just a handful of some of the things you can your accessory lusting hands on here:

  • Hand felted earrings, rings, hair pins, and bracelets
  • Beautifully reworked / genuine vintage jewelry
  • Assorted textiles made into earrings, including leather
  • Aged copper necklaces
  • Doorknob bracelets
  • Coral necklace
  • Affordable to high end

It’s worth the trip in itself as the holidays draw near, but since it happens to be in the heart of Nob Hill shopping area you might as well make a day of it. Oh, and don’t forget your wallet, you’re going to need it.

1950’s Librarian Dress

Prance and Swagger is one of Portland’s new wave of online vintage stores and they have some fabulous new (old) goodies in this week. Bookmark their Etsy site and check it regularly if you want to be the one to walk home with a 1950’s “Librarian Dress.” I always love the thrill of the hunt in vintage shopping and doing it from your computer just made it a little easier.

Vintage Fashion Video

A look back at the daintier era of fashion shows.

Email

As Portland Fashion Week draws nearer and nearer to us, I thought it was a good idea to see how fashion shows have evolved over the years. Today, professional shows consist of blaring music, bright lights and the requisite celebrity in the front row wearing an oversized pair of sunglasses—indoors. Incidentally, since Portland is low on celebrities I volunteer to play that role if anyone is asking. Observe this fantastic video demonstrating how we have slowly gotten away from the multi-spin runway pose.
