Want to know the insider beauty tricks for the great Miss Monroe? We got ’em.

While there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that Marilyn Monroe is one of history’s great beauties, little was known about her actual beauty regimen. We can guess via detective skills that she’s not naturally peroxide blonde, and most have heard tale of the plastic surgeries, but this in depth video with makeup artist Lisa Eldridge gets down to nitty gritty details.
Her effortless looking beauty always seemed to appear with just a great mascara and swipe of signature red lipstick, but this step-by-step remake shows you how Monroe’s look was incredibly calculated and time consuming.
I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse about myself…
Watch AMNW every Friday to see Portland’s own reality competition.

If you’re reading a fashion blog, odds are you are familiar with a little show called Project Runway. But, are you familiar with Portland’s own reality design competition happening on AMNW for the next month? If not (and you’re not already intrigued), what if I said I was one of the judges working my best Michael Kors impression (read: spray tanned and wacky).
Well it’s all true. Last Friday the AMNW Design Challenge kicked off with four young designers that are all students or recent grads from The Art Institute of Portland’s fashion design department vying for a top prize worth nearly $5,000. But to score that deal they’ll have to go through weekly challenges and impress judges like me, Fashion Director of Q6 Model & Artist Management, Jonny Schultz, and American Sewing Guild 2008 Hall of Fame Honoree, Pati Palmer.
In last week’s challenge, the designers had to mix three prints from Westminster to come up with an eye-catching (and hopefully) pleasing display. What did I have to say about it? Watch the video below and see it live every Friday at 9am on Channel 2. I’ll feel you waving at me through the television.
Portland’s fashion scene has a hand in everything.

Once again we have proof that the fashion scene in Portland extends its reach far and wide. This time local photographer/director Alicia J. Rose hired fashion designer Emily Katz to both star in and style a 70’s alien/disco/facial hair/bikini madness music video for the band Cake. You know you want to see the results.

It’s another week and another cool thing from Solestruck. This time the quickly growing shoe tycoon put together a rockin’ roller rink shoot giving love to their Antiquities Department (aka vintage) with local apparel from Ms. Wood, Rad Summer, Yo Vintage and Moonwoods. Basically, it looks like the coolest kids in school had a party and we wish we were invited.
See the entire lookbook here and watch the video shenanigans below.

Videographer: Samantha Chin

If you’re of the mindset that we PoMo (insider lingo for Portland Monthly) folk get ourselves into all kinds of shenanigans on the sets of shoots and while digging up stories….you’re absolutely right. Our newest tribute to having fun takes the form of our amazing fashion-ish spread Portlandia Abroad that answers the question: what would happen if Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein tried to take our one-of-a-kind Pdx flavor out across the world.
And if that wasn’t enough to give you a giggle, behold the behind the scenes video of the shoot where we play with dogs in a baby harnesses, polar bear costumes and Pabst. If this doesn’t tickle your funny bone, I’d get it looked at by a doctor.

Ok, this might not be your typical “fashion” video. But, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On has nearly 15 million hits on You Tube and just may be the cutest little husk in the blogosphere. Why? We credit most of that to her little pink shoes.
Once again proving shoes really do make the outfit….

Huge props to filmakers Aaron Rayburn and Ryan Bush for creating an awe inspiring look into the life of Andrea Aranow. A woman who dedicated her life to creating patterns for the rest of us to live in. And along the way she got to become buddies with Miles Davis, hang out with Jimi Hendrix and pick up some awesome stories. Her digital archive of over 26,000 textile prints sits right here in our city. To read the full story visit Fortport.com

OPB reporter Ifanyi Bell brought his camera crew to hang out with me at Portland Fashion Week and see what it’s like as I shimmy around the style world. Thank goodness I splurged on that spray tan!

If you’ve done even a smidge of vintage shopping in this city, you already know that we’ve got the cream of the crop. But, did you realize our vintage goodies are fabulous enough to lure in stylish Brits from across the pond? That seems to be how we managed to luck our way into Sarah Radcliffe, owner of Yo Vintage. The mainly online store has some unbelievable finds from both here and her home territory for an always eye-catching combination. Watch the video to learn a little bit more about the beauty/brains combo.
Visual proof of how much fun we have on the sets of our editorials.

Putting together our bi-annual fashion editorials is a ton of work. It begins with concepting an idea, forecasting what Pdx stores will carry, casting photographers and models, scouting locations, pulling clothing from all over town, assembling it into outfits and then actually editing it into a layout. But once you’ve done all the stressful planning and show up on the actual shoot, it’s a whole lot of fun. Take a little peek behind-the-scenes of the frenzied fun of our fall fashion editorial.
