Here’s a trend for the non-girly-girls out there. Top designers like Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone and Nicole Miller have taken some of the signature details of activewear and incorporated it into every day gear that doesn’t look like you’re heading to the gym. Today’s trend watch is actually an oldie, but a goodie: The peplum. The little bit of circular fabric added at the waistline became big in the 40’s thanks to Christian Dior’s New Look. Designers are once again embracing the figure flattering detail that creates an hourglass figure for any lass with peplums popping up on blouses, jackets, skirts, and dresses.

In our world if you see a trend showing up in collections by Vera Wang, Alexander McQueen and Badgley Mischka, we say, give it a go.

In our (probably passive-aggressive) attempt at world domination, the Portland bird phenomenon just became legitimized with designers like Marc Jacobs and Carolina Herrera embracing the notion. The aviary wonders pop up most often in lightweight blouses (preferably button-downs or tanks), and floaty dresses. If that feels like too much, work the magic in accessories like jewelry and scarves.

TV personality and style expert, Robert Verdi theorizes about the runway explosion, “Birds are a happy, free species…People are craving freedom, and flight, and change.”

Yup, that sounds like us.

When you’re considering where to splurge in the shopping world, it’s best to think about the ratio of use that item will get in comparison to the rest of your closet. For example, a fabulous pair of jeans gets more wear than a sequin halter (unless you are really working the 70’s revival). Another item scoring high this season on the wearability card are tailored jackets.

Tailored jackets can range anywhere from a full black and white tuxedo jacket to a nipped in blazer. The point is to show your body with a proper fit, while providing another layer in the cool trending months. Throw one over a t-shirt for a casual, but classy, look or pair with a pencil skirt for dressier times.

As far as getting the bang for your buck, a chic little jacket will never go out of style….Just ask Chanel.

Ahhhh sweater weather. That time of year where you get to essentially wear a big fuzzy blanket on your body and pretend it’s clothing. It’s the only thing that makes another rainy Oregon day bearable. Well that, and maybe a Hot Toddy.

The runway masters deem chunky knits are the way to go this year with an emphasis on layering. The need-it knits are quick and easy looks paired with skinny jeans and boots or just a giant sweater dress with textured tights. Don’t forget to store these chunky pieces flat on your shelf and not on a hanger or you’ll get a funky stretched out shape.

In the fickle world of fashion, few things can be counted on to stick around longer than you can say “Hammer Pants.” The good ol’ denim jacket is a welcome exception to that rule. Here are a tricks to doing these casual coats right:

1. Stiff denim up top looks (and feels) awkward. Go for soft, beat-up, and weathered to get that perfect lived-in look.
2. We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: Avoid the “Canadian tuxedo.” Pair a cropped jacket with a flowing maxi dress for a nice juxtaposition, or a dark denim blazer cut over a shorter cotton sundress.
3. Watch your proportions. Mid-rib cropped down to the waist says modern and on trend. If your hemline drops to ankle length, you’re bucking for the chance to star in an old Western, while if it creeps up high enough to become a denim shrug, you’ll fit right into a Britney Spears back-up dancer troupe.

Boots are always big in our northwestern neck of the woods, but don’t get corralled into thinking one shape fits all. The bootie wave is sweeping fashion as the perfect option when you want a little touch of tough, but don’t need a full cowgirl line-dancing kind of time. The fun part about these is you can wear them with eye-catching little lace socks, or tuck a pair of tights right in. Not feeling so frilly?
