After the success of new store Machus, boutique owner Justin Machus has decided to close long time Hawthorne boutique Local 35. The store has maintained a great reputation during its tenure on Hawthorne and though we’re excited for his new endeavors, we’re kinda bummed to see Local 35 go. But it leaves you with the chance to do some serious sale shopping.

From Monday January 2nd to Sunday January 8th:

-Storewide 35% Off Sale

-All Remaining Jackets 50% Off

-Several Sale Racks Taken to Further Markdowns

Shop Adorn Burns Down

The new year begins with a forced reboot.

Email
Unveiling1

Shop Adorn had just moved to this new location in the fall.

This morning adorable Fremont boutique, Shop Adorn, was destroyed by an electrical fire. While details are still murky, it’s clear this is an incredibly unfortunate way for a member of our community to begin the new year. Owner Nicole Whitesell sent the follwing statement:

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

2012 started off with one of the biggest challenges of my life. Shortly after moving into our new location, the business that I had spent years building burned down.

It’s hard to express in words what I felt when I got the call – profound relief that no one was hurt and fear of what I was about to face. It has to be every shop owners’ nightmares…the store you base your livelihood up in flames. I raced to the shop but by the time I got there, it was all over. Unfortunately, the damage was substantial and there’s not much that can be salvaged. As of now, all I know is that it was an electrical fire. The coming days and weeks will bring more information and I’ll be able to begin the process of rebuilding.

Throughout this ordeal, the support, compassion and kindness that my friends and customers have shown me and my family have been of tremendous comfort. And it gives me the strength to start to again. Because this is what I do and what I love. I have had the great fortune to pursue my dreams and although life has dealt me a major setback, I intend to keep following my passion.

Thank you.

Nicole Whitesell

Boys Fort

A Q&A with the men behind pop-up shop Boys Fort.

Email

The PDX Pop-Up Shop Project came about when the Downtown Retail Strategy Task Force saw that empty shop spaces were just sitting there, sad and lonely during the holiday season. The project leases empty downtown stores to small businesses for a ridiculously low price ($1) to help them get some exposure when they normally couldn’t afford to, and give holiday shoppers access to more cool things. Each year something awesome comes from this exchange and this season our eyes are fixed upon Boys Fort.

Founded by Jake France and Richard Rolfe whose “day job” is Kenton Collective, a Portland based design collaborative, the shop boasts some of the best visual merchandising I’ve ever seen. From custom furniture to reclaimed lighting while also tossing in wallets, art and accessories the store exudes cool. I snagged France amidst all the busy holiday hubbub for a quickie Q&A.

Eden Dawn: What did you and Rolfe want people to feel when they walk into the space?

Jake France: We wanted the shop to be an experience. Like any good store you visit, there’s an experience…sights, smells, mood…etc. We wanted it to feel like an installation of sorts. Part gallery, part retail and part hyper nostalgia.

ED: Do you consider yourself a home store? Gift store? Everything store?

JF: We look at Boys Fort as being our take on a locally produced men’s home and lifestyle store. There are tons of stores for the girls…so we thought the guys should have their own too…Manthropology?

ED: What’s turning into your best seller as we head to the holidays?

JF: We have many great sellers, one of the best sellers so far is a line of cards and prints from a new letterpress called Archie’s Press. Archie makes really fantastic diagrams/maps of Portland and they are really wonderful.

ED: Are there plans for you to continue operating beyond the pop-up era?

JF: We would love to find some way to keep the fort going in some fashion after the holiday season, but we will see. Our true passion is design and we want to keep the focus of our design group, Kenton Collective, on interior design work. You never know though…Boys’ Fort could pop up again someday.

ED: Can girls come hang out in the Boys Fort?

JF: Girls are always allowed in the Fort … besides, who do you think shops for guys!?

Longtime vintage curator, Liz Gross, opens a 50’s chic bridal salon.

Brides-to-Be (and friends of) take note. One of Portland’s most beloved vintage stores, Xtabay, took over the top floor of its space and turned it into a late 1950s Parisian Atelier. Owner Liz Gross has amassed nearly 100 vintage wedding gowns from the 1920s-60s, plus a handful of modern high-end couture gowns.

The collection consistently changes and grows with Gross always on the eye for a perfectly dreamy dress. She states her goal of the salon “is to provide modern brides a luxurious bridal shopping experience while offering them something unique, one of a kind, “green” and extremely affordable.” And FYI if you do find the gown you crave they provide services such as alterations, re-working and customizing. There’s even a full time seamstress on hand during the appointment for consultations.

As if the gorgeous vintage wedding gowns weren’t enough the bridal salon also sells accessories such as headpieces, veils, vintage and antique jewelry, shoes, shawls, and fabulous bridesmaid dresses. But what goes underneath all that? The shop carries the official shape wear line used on TV’s Mad Men – Rago. The 65-year-old New York based company specializes in nipping tucking and displaying everything just right for your big day.

Currently the bridal salon is by appointment only so call to set up a viewing with your bridesmaids in tow. The shop will provide the tea, coffee and champagne, but your girlies will provide the Oohs-and-Ahhs.

Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon
2515 SE Clinton St., Portland, OR 97202
Entrance is on the corner on 25th, under the blue awning

Not getting hitched but you still want to check it out? The bridal salon hosts it’s Open House Saturday the 10th (tomorrow) from 12-6pm. Browse the gowns and keep a mental checklist for anyone that might need a dress soon.

Little Boxes: A Community Shopping Love Fest

A tag team collaborative effort of shopping fun.

Email
Little_boxes

One of Portland’s most endearing qualities is the ability of our community to actually get behind each other. The fashion world has a rep for being cutthroat and cruel, but here the local shop owners do what they can to create a support system to co-exist in. Little Boxes is a prime example of that.

Big Box retailers spend a billion dollars in advertising to try and get you into their doors on Black Friday with lines stretched out in the cold at 3am and fistfights over the last pair of black gloves. On the complete counter opposite, Portland’s locally owned shops (aka Little Boxes) created a one-day collaborative Black Friday shopping event. What does that mean? Well, they’re showing each other love by including a cross-promotional discount providing a 10% discount to any customer who shows a receipt from a different participating business from that day. Awww, that’s sweet!

As if the camaraderie discount giving wasn’t enough there’s more. First, all the stores have agreed the hours are 10am – 8pm for the day. Hello, sleeping in after the carb fest. They’ll also have maps for all the participating stores in case you can’t remember all 90+ off the top of your head. Finally, in between being plied with glasses of champagne or treats you can pick up a raffle ticket at every store and win a ton of rad prizes including: iPad2, Cirque du Soleil tickets, facials, a Hotel Deluxe package, local restaurant and boutique certificates and many more.

Just stop Little Boxes. You had us at sleeping in (and discounts, and prizes).

Isaac Hers Spring Lookbook

Dreaming of sunnier days to come? This’ll help.

Email

As the rain pounds down on the windows outside and the wind blows cold, we’re already dreaming of hot weather, sunny days and well, summer. Yes, it’s premature, but collections like Isaac Hers Con Sol El are not helping to ground reality. The name “Con El Sol" comes literally from designer Barbara Seipp’s desire (and the direct translation) “to be with the sun.” Weather Whether it’s delusional right now or not, the line calls for margaritas and beach walks with its pretty maxi skirts and drapey dresses.

Sigh… How long until July?

Local 35 Gets a Sibling

The east side gets another cool place to shop.

Email
Local35

In a week of already happy neighborhood news, we got another reason for you to grin. Longtime Hawthorne shop, Local 35, will get a sister (brother?) next month. Proprietor Justin Machus snatched up the corner space in the bSide6 gallery, next to the now infamous pop culture space for the Public Isolation Project.

The as-of-yet unnamed shop is set to features higher end clothing for men and women (with taste) in their mid-twenties to mid-forties. Think lines likes Alexander Wang for men and women, Apolis, Paul Rose Canadian menswear line and Porter out of Japan. The idea rolled around in Machus head for some time before the opportunity presented itself and now shoppers (particularly men) will reap the benefits.

Plans for the new shop include the entire inventory to be available online for shoppers outside the city (or lazy ones down the street). Continuing the tradition of his stores being well known for their art displays as well as cool stock, Machus plans to have a rotating video art for customers to zone out on (artists interested in submitting should email justin@local35.com).

Before you even think it: Don’t worry, when it comes time for the grand opening party, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Portland Garment Factory Debuts HouseLine

PGF hosts their first fashion show this weekend.

Email
Pgf_poster

In exciting news from the local design front, we’ve got ourselves a new line in town. Portland Garment Factory, already known for assisting in everything from pattern grading to manufacturing for other local designers will debut their own line (aptly titled HouseLine) this Saturday night in a sure to be exciting event.

In an interview with company owner Britt Howard she revealed some exciting little tidbits about what the lucky attendees will see. Howard designed the pieces, along with her business partner Rosemary Robinson, focusing on natural and sustainable fabrics and methods with an emphasis on quality tailoring, craftsmanship and skills. The sizes run from 2 to 16 and feature ample seams in mind for custom tailoring to get a garment that fully flatters. Howard said she and Robinson’s line is “meant to span multiple seasons and generations—all while attempting to redefine what it means to own a garment made in the USA."

Saturday night will no doubt be a full on party with the debut of the fall collection (available that night in the onsite pop up shop), the preview of the spring collection (for orders) and it’s the third anniversary of the Portland Garment Factory to boot. With all that to celebrate it’s no wonder the ladies had to break out the big guns: “dancing, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, custom chocolates, more drinks, a special Pop Up shop featuring some great Portland talent (Laura Irwin, Harding & Wilson and more) and of course, great company!”

To make sure you’re one of the cool kids at the party, get yourself a $10 ticket now.

Last Saturday Adam Arnold held his own in-store fashion show to the delight of attendees. While I (very sadly) couldn’t make it to the show, it looks like Mr. Arnold, his director of production Maya Attar and Studio Assistant Brady Lange made a real splash with a runway coated with water. Is that a nod to our rainy weather?

Check out the slide show for more images or Adam-Arnold.com for the full collection.

Tote Your Dachshund Love

A shopping tote bag that benefits the puppies.

Email
Bean_green_bean_tote

Designer Claire Wolfson, President Bean and a tote.

Claire Wolfson really loves her boss. Not the one at her day job of designing apparel for Columbia Sportswear, but the one at her company Bean. He’s about 2 feet long, furry, barks and is the cutest company president around. The foundation of this tiny new online start up is a simple one, but with purpose: They love dachshunds. And Wolfson says that idea, “is really important to us.”

Two years ago President Bean (a mini black and tan dachshund) suffered a serious but common back injury. Once Wolfson and her boyfriend found out this happens often, they decided to do what they could to help the other darling dachshunds in the world.

Bean just launched with their signature totes. The labels are hand stitched here and the totes are locally screened at a friend’s shop. 10% of each purchase goes directly to the Oregon Dachshund Rescue to help doxies in need. Next up Bean will diversify into sunglasses, bean bandanas, and 5 panel hats.

Cat people need not purchase.
