Boys Fort

A Q&A with the men behind pop-up shop Boys Fort.

Email

The PDX Pop-Up Shop Project came about when the Downtown Retail Strategy Task Force saw that empty shop spaces were just sitting there, sad and lonely during the holiday season. The project leases empty downtown stores to small businesses for a ridiculously low price ($1) to help them get some exposure when they normally couldn’t afford to, and give holiday shoppers access to more cool things. Each year something awesome comes from this exchange and this season our eyes are fixed upon Boys Fort.

Founded by Jake France and Richard Rolfe whose “day job” is Kenton Collective, a Portland based design collaborative, the shop boasts some of the best visual merchandising I’ve ever seen. From custom furniture to reclaimed lighting while also tossing in wallets, art and accessories the store exudes cool. I snagged France amidst all the busy holiday hubbub for a quickie Q&A.

Eden Dawn: What did you and Rolfe want people to feel when they walk into the space?

Jake France: We wanted the shop to be an experience. Like any good store you visit, there’s an experience…sights, smells, mood…etc. We wanted it to feel like an installation of sorts. Part gallery, part retail and part hyper nostalgia.

ED: Do you consider yourself a home store? Gift store? Everything store?

JF: We look at Boys Fort as being our take on a locally produced men’s home and lifestyle store. There are tons of stores for the girls…so we thought the guys should have their own too…Manthropology?

ED: What’s turning into your best seller as we head to the holidays?

JF: We have many great sellers, one of the best sellers so far is a line of cards and prints from a new letterpress called Archie’s Press. Archie makes really fantastic diagrams/maps of Portland and they are really wonderful.

ED: Are there plans for you to continue operating beyond the pop-up era?

JF: We would love to find some way to keep the fort going in some fashion after the holiday season, but we will see. Our true passion is design and we want to keep the focus of our design group, Kenton Collective, on interior design work. You never know though…Boys’ Fort could pop up again someday.

ED: Can girls come hang out in the Boys Fort?

JF: Girls are always allowed in the Fort … besides, who do you think shops for guys!?

The Portland Bazaar

Make it to this one, or you’ll be sorry.

Email
Portlandbazaar_square

The word bazaar conjures up either exotic images of Turkish streets lined with bright textiles and fragrant spices or a florescent-lit community hall with grandmothers exchanging knit booties. This weekend’s Portland Bazaar will be neither.

The grand affair is poised to be one of the most fun events wrapping up 2011 with a host of awesome vendors, classes and entertainment. Producers Grace Bonney (Design Sponge), Matt Piece (Wood and Faulk) and Greg Hennes (Antler and Co.) must have done some smooth talking to completely take over Sandbox Studio for the two-day extravaganza. Stop by this weekend to see 40 shops and designers selling goodies for the holidays while smells waft in from the yummy food carts outside.

Sign up for classes of your choice with Saturday offering up wreath or lantern making, chocolate tasting or building your own terrarium. And on Sunday you could DIY some ornaments, learn how to etch glass or how to pour a fancy cocktail before doing some woodcrafts. If none of that floats your boat you could easily geek out at the authors present for book signings with The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy and his tale Wildwood as well as photographer Corey Arnold and Bonney will sign copies of her beautiful home book.

All in all, a lot better than the booties in a community hall and a lot closer than Turkey.

Vendors: Wood & Faulk, Antler & Co., Ampersand, Beam & Anchor, Phloem Studio, The Official OMFG Co., Alder & Co., Frazier & Wing, OLO, Bridge & Burn, Studio Olivine, The Good Flock, Haunt, Satsuma Press, Sketchbook, Pigeon Toe, Poler, Scout Books, Seaworthy,Julianna Swaney, Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co., Caravan Pacific, stone and honey, Favor Jewelry, Little Otsu, Walnut Studio, Pinball Publishing, Reading Frenzy, Shwood Shop, Beckel Canvas Products, Confectionery, Eden, Grove, Old School Stationers, SPACECRAFT, Maak Soap Lab, Heartwood, Egg Press, Una, Kim Boyce and more

Events: There will be live music performances (from Greylag and Copper Fox), craft classes, demonstrations and food/drink tastings each day.

Food + Drink: The street in front of the Bazaar will be shut down for food trucks and coffee carts serving delicious local treats.

The Portland Bazaar
December 10th + 11th, 2011
9am–6pm both days

CONTENT is Coming Back

The killer showcase comes back after taking a year off.

Designer Liza Rietz installation at the ’09 event.

Mark you calendars right now for October is quickly shaping up to be the most packed, fashion-filled month of all. Not only will Portland Fashion Week be in full swing, over taking the city for a week, but whispers of a few other events too fragile to be named as of yet have great promise of excitement. And if that wasn’t enough to get you titillated CONTENT is coming back October 1st after a year’s hiatus.

The preparations are still in embryo form, but rumor of a block party and pop up shop are swirling around. The same mastermind group of organizers (Gretchen Jones, Marjorie Skinner, Connie Wohn, Pam Baker-Miller, etc) is working to put together this awesome event. If you missed CONTENT ’09 then a quick summary of the event: Each designer that participates takes over a room at The Ace Hotel for whatever kind of installation they want to put together. That could range from faux dead models in clothing (Adam Arnold), to a normal shop (Church & State) or one model in a dress that encompasses an entire bed (Holly Stalder). It’s hands down one of the coolest things to see in our local fashion world, so again – Mark Your Calendar.

MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Event

Yo Vintage kicks off a summer of Popping Up with a party.

Email
Mayday-v

Swing in to the Mayday event to see Madame Ranunculus floral installation!

When the itch for my vintage fix needs scratching I know I can count on Yo Vintage. Owner Sarah Radcliffe always seems to have something to make this mug look a little better. I’ll be relying on that trick heavily tonight when I climb from my achey miserable sick bed to head to the Open Season fashion show in hopes my Yo Vintage sequin number can distract the attention from my Rudolph red nose. For those of you who aren’t as comfortable with online shopping you’re in luck. The usually web-only store is setting up camp at the gorgeous Salon 220 for the whole summer in a Pop Up shop.

On Saturday, May 14 the summer long store will kick off the summer with MAYDAYMAYDAY!, the opening night of a three month pop-up shop to be held in 220 Studio in downtown Portland from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Yo Vintage will present their eclectic spring/summer collection: all one-of-a-kind, vibrant vintage pieces. Think standout sunshine stunners such bright prints, playful jumpsuits, and dreamy dresses, plus never before seen merchandise before they hit the web to be snapped up by envious New Yorkers.

The temp shop will also serve as a collaborative effort among 220 Salon hair stylists and local Portland artists and designers. Each month twill feature a new special guest. For MAYDAYMAYDAY!, floral designer Madame Ranunculus will bust out her floral art installation for up to two weeks, which will feature a Maypole and two swings! “I want to create a psychedelic springtime experience where it feels as if the flower fields are blooming for you from every direction.” Expect freshly cut, bright blooms hanging in mobiles and flower flowers everywhere! Seedbombs, terrarium kits and terrarium necklaces will also be for sale and I will be escorted out after getting caught crawling up on a swing.

MAYDAYMAYDAY! is a free event open to the public and complimentary refreshments will be served. There will be an open bar with bartenders serving wine, fizz, and beer.

Runway Happiness

The Weekend in Pictures

The Flurry and Xtabay shows in visual representation.

Email

Portland is a cold, cruel world today. Not only because I flew in from Honolulu last night after a week of basking in the tropical sun with blue-green waves crashing at my feet (don’t hate me, I have been trying to squeeze in that vacation for the last 5 years), but because when I was gone I missed all kinds of fun fashion times. And I hate missing out on anything fun and fashion related. I can tell from the activity on my Facebook page that multiple events went down, but notably two fashion shows took place. The Xtabay Holiday Show with beautiful girls in vintage gowns who put on elbow length gloves and sashayed about with invisible books atop their heads. This video has left me more than a little jealous since I long for day when I can find a suitable reason to put on elbow length gloves, but alas no reason ever comes. On the opposite spectrum the slideshow contains pictures from pop up shop Flurry’s weekend show featuring 15 local designers like Betty Jean Couture and Ms. Woods. Overall the clothes look pretty dang cute, but I have to question some of the hair styling at the show. I love big hair, but once it gets above 4", it’s pretty distracting. You can pick up items from both of these shows at their respective stores. If you made it to either runway extravaganza, let us know your thoughts!
