A tag team collaborative effort of shopping fun.

One of Portland’s most endearing qualities is the ability of our community to actually get behind each other. The fashion world has a rep for being cutthroat and cruel, but here the local shop owners do what they can to create a support system to co-exist in. Little Boxes is a prime example of that.
Big Box retailers spend a billion dollars in advertising to try and get you into their doors on Black Friday with lines stretched out in the cold at 3am and fistfights over the last pair of black gloves. On the complete counter opposite, Portland’s locally owned shops (aka Little Boxes) created a one-day collaborative Black Friday shopping event. What does that mean? Well, they’re showing each other love by including a cross-promotional discount providing a 10% discount to any customer who shows a receipt from a different participating business from that day. Awww, that’s sweet!
As if the camaraderie discount giving wasn’t enough there’s more. First, all the stores have agreed the hours are 10am – 8pm for the day. Hello, sleeping in after the carb fest. They’ll also have maps for all the participating stores in case you can’t remember all 90+ off the top of your head. Finally, in between being plied with glasses of champagne or treats you can pick up a raffle ticket at every store and win a ton of rad prizes including: iPad2, Cirque du Soleil tickets, facials, a Hotel Deluxe package, local restaurant and boutique certificates and many more.
Just stop Little Boxes. You had us at sleeping in (and discounts, and prizes).

Yo Vintage, Palace Clothing and Salon 220 team up for a pre-NYE event.

An 80’s party dress from YO Vintage’s newly revamped web site.
By tomorrow night the packages will be unwrapped, the stockings will be empty and my swearing off of all sugar will have begun. It’s time to start thinking ahead to the next gala and preparing to ring in 2011. First step in this process is nailing the perfect New Year’s Eve outfit. I believe how good I look at midnight sets my fashion tone for the year, so choose your ensemble carefully.
Obviously I’m not the only one who feels this way. The ladies behind Palace boutique and YO Vintage have teamed up to give us Frock Off, a NYE shopping fest. Taking place the 29th at Salon 220 you can slip on vintage outfits, while sipping champagne and getting your hair done with gal pals. Hello 80’s movie montage! Discounts galore are promised as well as a happening after-party at Valentine’s bar. You can pre-practice your champagne toasts and get proper feedback on any potential outfits. Just hold off on the Auld Lang Syne.

The bazaar for the not so bizarre

An embroidered make-up bag from Snap Designs, one of the many vendors at Tiga’s Bazaar!
I would like to say I have the memory of an elephant. I would like to say that, but I don’t enjoy the comparison to an elephant, nor is it always true. However, I do tend to remember situations where I get bailed out on, which is why I fondly recall Tiga’s Holiday Bazaar for saving my procrastinating present-buying hindquarters. Tiga is a chill little bar in NoPo frequented by 20 and 30-somethings in need of a well-poured drink. Co-owner Maryam Troncelliti also happens to know about a billion talented people in this town and is squishing in several of them this Sunday for another bazaar. Last year I picked up adorable little felt pins from Frozen Peas Accessories, who will be making another appearance as well as a host of other crafty talents. It’s a good Sunday pop-in for those not afraid of close-quarters, a tasty hot toddy, music spinning and hearing “That’s so cute!” (That last part will probably be my voice, sorry…)
Vendors:
Thermals bassist Kathy Foster will be selling her own paper collaged cards.
Queen of the felt pin, Frozen Peas Accessories will be there.
Studio Acorn is hawking some of their sweet little skull & crossbones necklaces.
Snap Design is representing with perfectly stitched make-up and lap top bags.
Plus several others offering up bath salts, jewelry, aprons, stockings, hats, bags, magnets, stuffed little friends and artsy goods..

One look from designer Heidi Merrick
Get your glitz and glamour on tomorrow night at Bubble Boutique’s “Tinsel Town” Fashion Show. The runway festivities will show off some of LA designer, Heidi Merrick’s, pretty party looks to bring in 2011. Bubble has made it into a full, swanky evening complete with DJ, cocktails, snacks, a guest list of many from the Portland Fashion Week scene and a 15% discount on select items. This is coming at a good time. I haven’t been to a fashion show in a month and I’m starting to get withdrawal symptoms.

Holiday Cheer
Tonight is the time to stroll Hawthorne.
Posted by: Eden Dawn on Dec 09, 2010 at 02:00PM
Take the fam out tonight for a bit of cheer.
It may be raining cats and dogs, but don’t let that stop you from heading out this evening to the Hawthorne Holiday Stroll. There will be heated tents, hot cocoa, carolers, raffles, holiday spirit, and maybe an elf sighting. Many of Hawthorne’s 100+ stores are taking part in sales, as well as donating proceeds to Impact NW. A few of our favorites joining in are Imelda’s Shoes and Louie’s Shoes for Men, Dosha Salon Spa, The Monkey King, Gold Dust Meridian, Crossroads Trading Company, Hawthorne Happenings, Mink and Local 35. The Bagdad is even showing a free Christmas movie for the kiddos at 6pm. Don’t let the rainy day turn you into a Grinch, go have some fun.

Finally, something to do with that stockpile of jugs you have.
The chance to get one of kind Christmas/Hanukkah/Arbor Day (maybe you know someone who loves Arbor Day?) gifts keep on coming. Starting Thursday, the Art Institute of Portland is having their 5th Annual Holiday Bazaar with handmade goodies by genius students, staff and faculty. We’re talking about everything from home décor to accessories, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the school’s scholarship fund. I am completely biased as an instructor at Ai, but I can definitely say these students get out of this world creative. Example: student designer Robert LaCosse will be selling cubic lamps he made from re-purposed plastic jugs. Bet you can’t find that at the mall!
What: Ai’s Holiday Bazaar
Where: The Art Institute
1122 NW Davis St
Portland, Or
When: Thursday Dec 2nd 5:30-9pm
Friday, Dec 3rd 10am-5pm
