Portland Garment Factory Debuts HouseLine

PGF hosts their first fashion show this weekend.

Email
Pgf_poster

In exciting news from the local design front, we’ve got ourselves a new line in town. Portland Garment Factory, already known for assisting in everything from pattern grading to manufacturing for other local designers will debut their own line (aptly titled HouseLine) this Saturday night in a sure to be exciting event.

In an interview with company owner Britt Howard she revealed some exciting little tidbits about what the lucky attendees will see. Howard designed the pieces, along with her business partner Rosemary Robinson, focusing on natural and sustainable fabrics and methods with an emphasis on quality tailoring, craftsmanship and skills. The sizes run from 2 to 16 and feature ample seams in mind for custom tailoring to get a garment that fully flatters. Howard said she and Robinson’s line is “meant to span multiple seasons and generations—all while attempting to redefine what it means to own a garment made in the USA."

Saturday night will no doubt be a full on party with the debut of the fall collection (available that night in the onsite pop up shop), the preview of the spring collection (for orders) and it’s the third anniversary of the Portland Garment Factory to boot. With all that to celebrate it’s no wonder the ladies had to break out the big guns: “dancing, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, custom chocolates, more drinks, a special Pop Up shop featuring some great Portland talent (Laura Irwin, Harding & Wilson and more) and of course, great company!”

To make sure you’re one of the cool kids at the party, get yourself a $10 ticket now.

Last Saturday Adam Arnold held his own in-store fashion show to the delight of attendees. While I (very sadly) couldn’t make it to the show, it looks like Mr. Arnold, his director of production Maya Attar and Studio Assistant Brady Lange made a real splash with a runway coated with water. Is that a nod to our rainy weather?

Check out the slide show for more images or Adam-Arnold.com for the full collection.

Bryce Black at NYFW

He may not have taken the prize, but Mr. Black still got to show his collection at New York Fashion Week.

Email

Spoiler alert: Reality television is staged. Now, I know that must be a lot for you to take in, but the truth must be heard. In the case of Project Runway they make a big to do about only the final three making it to New York fashion week, but actually the top ten contestants show collections. Why? Because they are decoys so you don’t know who the finalists really are since NYFW takes place months before the show’s finale airs.

The good news for us is local love Bryce Black made the cut of designers who got to show at Lincoln Center and he did a bang up job. The collection was inspired by Black’s love of the film Edward Scissorhands and you can see that translated through the ambrosia salad color palette, straight jacket detailing and edgy vibe. Well done Mr. Black, well done….

Leanne Marshall at NYFW

Six seasons of doing New York Fashion Week doesn’t mean it gets easier.

Former Pdx design darling Leanne Marshall left our rainy city for the concrete jungle after winning Season 5 of Project Runway. She’s still every bit as talented and kind while still (politely) crawling her way up the ladder of success in New York. This behind the scenes video shows the work Marshall puts into her sixth showing at New York Fashion Week as well as the gorgeous results. Take a minute for home town pride….

Last Wednesday’s Dress/Undress Fashion Show benefitting the Planned Parenthood’s Equal Access Fund (which aims to raise funding and awareness for Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette’s (PPCW) LGBTQ services and funding programs) was one big party. While it was actually equal parts fashion show with local designer and styling show with local boutiques the point was to check out the eye candy and have a good time. The slide show can fill you in on the rest.

Hats off to Alley 33 fashion show for putting together a fun local fashion event showcasing tons of Portland talent. For a first time event, things seemed to go together remarkably smooth and producer Bree Perry (owner of the Breedom sewing space) says they sold out of their 300 tickets. Rumor is they are already working on a bigger and better version for next year. (Click Facebook like button to that.)

The slideshow has the visual wrap up.

Who said fashion can only be for the young? This Saturday the Portland Design Collective hosts a fashion show with 84-year-old designer Elsie Bartling and her bridal collection. The show features 30 pieces Bartling created in the 1960’s through the 80’s all by hand using antique fabrics and patterns. Rumor is Bartling will be at the show for budding designers to get a word of advice or two.

If that wasn’t enough to entice you, designer Julia Barbee, from Frocky Jack Morgan, will also show a handful of companion pieces. And there is even a band playing called…wait for it…. Denim Wedding

Arabian Nights Fashion Show

Saturday is an Arabian Nights themed fashion show focused on jewelry more than apparel. The press release can fill you in on all the details.

FIXATE ON THE EARS, FASHION ON THE MIND
Local Artists Launch Sustainable Fashion International (SFI)

Local jewelry artists, Diane Mandaville and Kerry Yu will showcase their hottest sustainable earrings at the launch of Sustainable Fashion International (SFI) on July 9, 7-10pm, at their runway show, “101 Arabian Nights – Stories Told in Dance and Earrings “, which will be held at StudioNia on 9128 SW Yamhill, Portland

SFI is a cadre of fashion designers who promote and sponsor sustainable fashion artists. “We intend to set fashion on its ear by retelling the story of 1001 Arabian Nights through 101 sustainable earrings, Nia dance, and an enlightened Scheherazade. “ said Diane Mandaville, SFI CEO.

“Lots of designers give a nod to sustainability but we are taking it to an entirely new evant garde level. We want fashion to be synonymous with sustainability. That’s why our earrings are made of re-purposed, recycled, and up-cycled materials like vintage and old trade jewelry as well as packing waste, toilet paper rolls, wood, bone, and recycled metal.”

The 101 Nights show will also feature Native American artist, Fran Denham. “For hundreds of years our people hunted and fished. We used every part of our catch. There was no waste. Beaded art was passed down from one generation to the next. We adapt to our environment. We don’t try to change it. That’s sustainability.”

Models will be wearing sustainable Nia dancewear with their earrings. Nia dancer Jennie McCall will also join the cast of designers for this event.

Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
Prices are $100 VIP,
$50 Preferred Floor Cushion Seating,
$20 General Admission
July 9, 7-10pm

Nordic Fashion & You

An excuse to visit Seattle and a chance to win a trip to Reykjavik.

Email
Sweden_week_kerstin_alm

A menswear look from the line Moods of Norway at the 2010 Arctic Summer Nordic Fashion Show at the Nordic Heritage Museum

If you like any of the following things, read the entire post: Seattle, indie fashion, Nordic folks, sustainability, Reykjavik or Dianne Von Furstenburg. Interest piqued? Keep reading the info hijacked from our sister blog Seattle Met’s Wear What When.

In conjunction with the Nordic House in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Ballard institute’s Nordic Heritage Museum is hosting the first American iteration of the Nordic Fashion Biennale. It’s because of a successful program last year, Nordic Heritage’s 2010 Arctic Summer Fashion Show, that Ballard, and Seattle, got that honor. Reps from the Icelandic organization were here to see the 2010 show; they were impressed, and decided Seattle should start the stateside party.

The celebration of style and global design runs from September 30 through November 13 and will consist of three elements: a street fashion photo exhibit from the Nordic capitals, contemporary fashion from the five Nordic Countries shown with traditional customs from the Museum’s archives, and a sort of all-encompassing, genre-skipping exhibit of Nordic design to be installed in various formats throughout the Museum.

And, then there’s the design competition.

Open to fashion design students who live and create in the West Coast states (Portland that is you!), the Biennale’s fashion competition, NxNW, counts the creative director of Diane Von Furstenberg, Denmark’s leading skin care expert, and Icelandic designer Steinunn among its judges.

A two-day symposium focusing on sustainability, slow fashion, cultural heritage, and current trends in the marketplace presents another opportunity for the Northwest’s up-and-coming designers to get face time with global leaders. This aspect of the biennale is curated by New York-based Icelandic artist Hrafnhildur Arnardottir, also known as Shoplifter—also known as, let’s be honest, A Pretty Big Deal. Having collaborated with VPL, dressed Bjork, and been given page of praise in the New York Times, Shoplifter in Seattle is something to pay attention to.

The biennale, in general, is definitely something to pay attention to. Tell every up-and-coming dress designer and thing-maker you know to check out the guidelines and information on the Nordic Heritage Museum’s website. Deadline for entries is July 25; winners will receive round-trip airfare from Seattle to Reykjavik, three night’s accommodations, and entry to events during the 2012 Reykjavik Fashion Week.
