Grayling’s New Bridal Collection

Grayling’s new line is geared towards brides, but looks good on everyone.

Email

“It’s difficult to find contemporary jewelry appropriate for a wedding,” says Katy Kippen, owner and designer of Grayling about her new line of bridal jewelry. After making countless custom pieces for brides, moms and bridesmaids who were unhappy with traditional options she decided to just dive in and create a collection for all those involved in the big day.

The line is comprised of twenty-plus styles of necklaces, earrings and bracelets ranging from bold to dainty blending crystal and pearls with antiqued silver accents to keep the pieces from being “overly girly.” While the line might be targeted to brides and bridal party, it just as easily could be viewed as a special occasion collection perfect for fancy events with or without the exchanging of vows.

Rocked at the Nines

This Sunday an epic bridal bash goes down at the Nines.

This Sunday Portland Bride & Groom is putting together a bridal blitz unlike any other. If you’re getting hitched, know anyone who’s about to, or, hey, you just feel like the time might be close, get yourself down to the Nines this weekend. In one fun afternoon you can check out around 90 local vendors that cover every aspect of the big event and then head off to an Oscar party for a full day of pretty party time.

You’ll get the chance to check out the Nines as the venue for a wedding reception, guest accommodations, a rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, and whatever else you can possibly think of. Three top bridal consultants have combined efforts to present three different styles of weddings: a traditional champagne formal wedding, an urban extravaganza with vibrant colors, and one over-the-top Lady Gaga–themed day with rich colors and extravagance galore. Each of the areas will have florists, photographers, cakes, wine/spirits, catering, and fashion for you to inspect.

The fun won’t stop there. There’s a “Groom’s Room,” boutique vendors for before, during, and after the big day (hello, honeymoon!), spas, fitness folks, accessories, and hair and makeup experts. And the cost to get in on all this action? Zilch, zero, nada. Just register to come, bring your gaggle of girls and enjoy the party.

Not a shabby way to spend a Sunday afternoon, eh?

The Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon

Longtime vintage curator, Liz Gross, opens a 50’s chic bridal salon.

Brides-to-Be (and friends of) take note. One of Portland’s most beloved vintage stores, Xtabay, took over the top floor of its space and turned it into a late 1950s Parisian Atelier. Owner Liz Gross has amassed nearly 100 vintage wedding gowns from the 1920s-60s, plus a handful of modern high-end couture gowns.

The collection consistently changes and grows with Gross always on the eye for a perfectly dreamy dress. She states her goal of the salon “is to provide modern brides a luxurious bridal shopping experience while offering them something unique, one of a kind, “green” and extremely affordable.” And FYI if you do find the gown you crave they provide services such as alterations, re-working and customizing. There’s even a full time seamstress on hand during the appointment for consultations.

As if the gorgeous vintage wedding gowns weren’t enough the bridal salon also sells accessories such as headpieces, veils, vintage and antique jewelry, shoes, shawls, and fabulous bridesmaid dresses. But what goes underneath all that? The shop carries the official shape wear line used on TV’s Mad Men – Rago. The 65-year-old New York based company specializes in nipping tucking and displaying everything just right for your big day.

Currently the bridal salon is by appointment only so call to set up a viewing with your bridesmaids in tow. The shop will provide the tea, coffee and champagne, but your girlies will provide the Oohs-and-Ahhs.

Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon
2515 SE Clinton St., Portland, OR 97202
Entrance is on the corner on 25th, under the blue awning

Not getting hitched but you still want to check it out? The bridal salon hosts it’s Open House Saturday the 10th (tomorrow) from 12-6pm. Browse the gowns and keep a mental checklist for anyone that might need a dress soon.

I'm Special

The Art of Weddings

This bridal blast comes but once a year.

Email

We are officially in the future. 2011 is here and though I am disappointed we still haven’t invented the hover boards from Back to the Future II, I think this year has a lot of promise. On the style front, it’s a whole new opportunity to take risks and try new things. And for some, the time to focus on the one outfit that will be reflected upon for many years to come: a wedding dress.

If you are a bride-to-be (or closely know one) your world can easily become consumed in the hunt for the outfit that captures the essence of you on that special day. This search does not have to consume you. There are thoughtful people in this city who are making an effort to put the fun part back into wedding planning, particularly Alexis Turk (owner of Jasmine Photography). Turk created The Art of Weddings six years ago as a showcase for some of our tip top wedding vendors to come to one space with the brides and bridesmaids while throwing a seriously swanky soiree.

Sounds like the same deal as the thing at the Convention Center? Not really. This one is a little more independent, a little more exclusively chosen and a lot less panic inducing. Turk had that all in mind during her planning stages, “The backbone of the event has always been to provide a fun, relaxed and visually stimulating environment for couples to walk away feeling inspired for their wedding day”. In addition to the low stress atmosphere and top notch vendors, 2011’s line up will include complimentary cocktails by Sake One, hors d’oeuvres by The Art of Catering and Devil’s Food Catering, a complementary pour by Noble Estate Vineyard & Winery and fashion show featuring bridal designs by Portland’s own Sarah Seven, Stephanie D Couture, and Charlotte’s Wedding. I’m not even penciled in to attend any weddings yet this year, but I’m excited to go for the fashion show alone (still secretly hoping I can make it fashionable to tromp around in wedding dresses daily, they’re so pretty!). Plus I have an odd fascination with centerpieces.

The annual event is this Thursday, January 6, 2011; Doors at 6 pm; Portland Center Stage at The Armory (128 NW Eleventh Ave.) Tickets are a mere $12, purchase online and bring print out to the door. Coat check on site. The fashion show will march down the aisle at 8:00pm, but the first 200 people through the door receive a gift bag. (Ooh!)
