Marilyn Monroe’s Makeup

Want to know the insider beauty tricks for the great Miss Monroe? We got ’em.

Email

While there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that Marilyn Monroe is one of history’s great beauties, little was known about her actual beauty regimen. We can guess via detective skills that she’s not naturally peroxide blonde, and most have heard tale of the plastic surgeries, but this in depth video with makeup artist Lisa Eldridge gets down to nitty gritty details.

Her effortless looking beauty always seemed to appear with just a great mascara and swipe of signature red lipstick, but this step-by-step remake shows you how Monroe’s look was incredibly calculated and time consuming.

I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse about myself…

Wax On, Wax Off with European Wax Center

Ditch your excess body hair for nothing with this special deal.

Email
Waxon

EWC’s purple wax strips leave you silky smooth.

There are two types of people in the world: Those who wax and those who don’t. Not positive which side of the hairy fence you fall on? Here’s an opportunity for you to find out…for free.

Next month Oregon gets its first European Wax Center (in Beaverton), and to celebrate the company is offering up a ton of complimentary waxing services. All you need to do is sign up on the center’s Grand Opening Guest List to receive free waxing services the week before the store opens. And we’re not talking just a partial lip here, guests who sign up can receive as many waxing services as they would like during their scheduled appointment.

The EWC’s system for waxing differs a little from what you might be used to. Their trademarked Comfort Wax is made with 100% natural beeswax and smoothed on the skin warm. Instead of the typical muslin strips you sit until the wax hardens, take a deep breath and wait for the big pull.

Now I know you’re saying, “Doesn’t that hurt?!” And the answer is, yup, for a second. But having two eyebrows instead of one makes it totally worth it.

Avalon Spa, I Think I Love Thee

When you need to be pampered, add this place to your list.

Email
Spa

No, this is not actually me. But it’s pretty close to how my day went.

View Slideshow » Illustration:

When life seems to get particularly rough, there is one sure-all cure for me: a spa day. It can scrape you off the bottom of the barrel and give you that little oomph you need to feel refreshed and recharged. Of course, that is completely dependent upon what spa you trust to spend your robed day with. I chose wisely last week and spent a blissful day at the Avalon Spa, part of the Avalon hotel on SW Macadam.

The way I know I’m in a top-notch spa is based on the experience from the second it starts. Avalon kicked it off right with free valet parking and some infused cinnamon-lemon-pear water while I was checked in. A brief tour of the massive space with curved hallways that had door after door leading to (I assume) magical little rooms, also bragged a female locker room with roomy dressing rooms, mini Jacuzzi, showers, lockers and a private entrance to the treatment rooms.

Once I stepped into my fluffy robe and locked my personals away in the provided locker, I was guided down another hallway to a room for my “Aromosoak.” Since I wasn’t entirely sure what that was, I didn’t know I would walk into a scene from a movie. Inside my own little room was a Jacuzzi bath with bubbles and rose petals strewn about. Candles flickered in the dark room while soothing music played and the second I was alone I hopped in. I had thirty minutes to soak it up and spent a large portion of that time re-enacting a variety of scenes from my favorite 90’s films that involved some kind of bubble bath scene – Pretty Woman, Clueless and (of course) Encino Man. It went by in a flash and before I knew it my esthetician, Kylene, was there to pick me up.

Spa_foot

She took me into another room where we had a good old time chatting away while I had a fantastic facial. Steam, hot towels, creams and serums were slathered on my face while she told me all about the June Jacobs Skin Care products (plant based, parabin free) she was using without once ever pushing me to buy. I really thought from all the poking and sloughing that when we left the room my face would be neon red. A quick glance in the mirror honestly startled me when my skin looked calm and happy. I’m pretty convinced there must be a secret ingredient of unicorn magic or something, because my skin has been happy for days now.

One last stop before they had to drag me out kicking and screaming, “I want to stay! Please!” was at the DEX make up counter. The brand is an anti-aging, mineral make up line that was designed for photography. My now BFF, Kylene gave me a quick touch up with the mineral based collection so I was ready to head off to a dinner party. I’m already a fan of mineral make-up and was all for the natural finished look. And before I left she even stopped to grab me a sample of the wee bit spendy moisturizer I was hemming and hawing over to test out for a couple days before I committed.

Spa_makeup

The next day I woke up and found an extra little spring in my step. It feels so good to indulge every now and again, trusting someone else to just take care of us while we sit there like a lazy blob. Avalon switched management somewhat recently and their big push now is to just make sure the client is as happy and relaxed as possible. Take a bow kiddos, it’s working.

Earth Day Packages:
You can try out Avalon’s indulgent services yourself right now with their special Earth Day Packages that are promoting the Waves for Water Organization. When you buy an Earth Day package Avalon will purchase a water filtration system for Waves for Water, an organization working in Brazil, Pakistan, Indonesia and Haiti to provide easy to implement Clean Water Filtration Solutions.

Spider Veins Be Gone!

This little cream is getting me ready for some short-shorts.

Email
1024w275

I guess I do like Charlotte’s Web, but that’s the only spider related thing I’ll tolerate.

A little FYI: I do not care for spiders, or anything related to spiders. This includes the couple spider veins that have surfaced on my upper leg. While these ones won’t bite, they are just as irritating and the sight also makes my skin crawl. So when cosmeceutical company, Dermelect sent me some of there Vacial Spider Vein Treatment cream to put to work, I was more than willing. It’s light on smell which this non-perfume girl likes and has a nice feel to it. And after a few weeks of use, those blue squiggly lines of vein seem to be heading back to where they belong. A little tub is under $40 and will likely last you through all of swimsuit season and beyond. It’s also probably a better route than swatting at your veins with a rolled up newspaper.

Ingredients:

Phytotonine: (Vitamin K) – is composed of concentrated hydroglycolic extracts of Arnica, Cypress and Solomon’s Seal. The virtues of these plants, rich in flavonoids, saponosides and procyanidols, are close to the activity of vitamin P, important for the microcirculation and strengthening of vein walls.

Horse Chestnut- helps to increase blood flow, strengthen connective tissue, and decrease redness. One of its compounds, Aescin, has been found to close the small pores in the walls of the veins, making them less permeable thus strengthening the vein walls and reducing leakage of fluid into the surrounding tissues.

Hyaluronic Acid, Jojoba Seed Extract- hydrating and softening properties

Emu Oil, Willow Leaf Extract, Shea Butter, Allantoin, Aloe Leaf Juice, Sunflower Seed Oil- moisturizing, soothing, softening properties

Grape Seed Extract- potent anti-oxidant known for its wound healing properties

Thar She Blows!

The latest trend in hair-styling blows into town

Email
Blow1
Photo: Michelle Morico

After romping around in the pouring rain on NW 23rd pretending to shop for other people, my locks were looking a bit frizzy, slightly sopping, and (after checking myself out in one of West Elm’s display mirrors) I noticed my bangs were plastered to my face in an especially unattractive way. Probably not the best look for making a first impression, but a perfect time to head to my appointment at the Pearl’s newest addition, and perhaps Portland’s next beauty phenomenon, Blowout, A Blow Dry Bar. The idea is to style women (and men) with perfectly coiffed hair, any day, for any reason, (i.e. hot date, job interview) or for no reason at all.

(Note: Sadly, hearing the term “blowout” triggers thoughts of Pauly D from The Jersey Shore, making me more than slightly apprehensive about the whole ordeal. Thankfully, aside from an excessive use of product, the two blowouts are of a different breed.)

When I arrived at 128 NW 12th Ave., “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” was a-bumping on the stereo while Blowout co-owner Tara De La Rosa showed me around the space, which was decked out in white, pink, gray, and black and adorned with cute extras like vanity mirrors that spin aside to make it easy to chat with your girlfriends over a cocktail. (On Mimosa Sundays, it’s $32 for a blowout and mimosa…tempting.)

The lovely ladies set me up with the “Blowout Luscious” package, which is a step up from their signature service, and features the addition of a deep conditioning treatment and 10-minute neck and scalp massage along with the blowout. My stylist, Tia, helped me decide on “the flirt” look, and according to the photos on the menu, I should have come out looking like Jessica Alba or Mandy Moore…we didn’t quite get there. But, my Vanilla Bean Deep Conditioning treatment did leave my hair smelling like a deliciously fragrant candle. So, there’s that.

After the shampooing and deep conditioning, Tia got to work on the blow dry; she explained every tool, technique, and product she used to groom me for my theoretical fancy night out (bowling, duh). She started by blowing my hair straight back (to remove all excess moisture). She then used a thick round brush to pull small sections of my hair up and out (to create volume) and then used the brush and dryer to smooth it out. Who knew hair styling was such a science? She pinned small sections of my hair up (a roller effect) to create wave, and then wrapped it up (literally, heh) by wrapping chunks of my hair around a flat iron (to create even more wave). There’s a glossing station to polish your lips on the way out, and the “Blowout Bosses” even snap your photo and upload it to Facebook so you can show all your friends!

The whole process took longer than I had planned, and when I left I felt a little like Shirley Temple; but maybe this was intentional, because by the time I got home (20 minutes later), my too-curly style had quickly assumed the role of being half-curly, half-straight. My limp hair is partially responsible for this, but I was convinced the five products used to enhance and preserve my look would have had me lasting a little longer than 20. To break it down, if I had a date with Prince William I would totally splurge on the “Bombshell,” (the menu says it will make jaws drop!) but for nights at the bowling alley I think I’ll just dig out my pink Barbie blow dryer from middle school and give it a whirl.

Photo

A Myspace style (sans kissy face) shot from my old-school slider phone of the fresh ‘do. Tia’s last step was wrapping chunks of my hair around a flat-iron to create waves, and that’s what stuck.

I do think this is the perfect way to snag some girl-time with friends or to bond with Mom, though. (My mom thinks mother/daughter manicures were fun; she’s not going to know what hit her.) But, am I going to insist on starting all my evenings out with a $32 blowout? Not likely…I think I’d rather spend it on cocktails.

To book an appointment for you and your gal pals (or boy pals! Blowout features a “Sir Blowout”), visit secure-booker.com or call the bar at 503-887-7396.
