Fantastic Mr. Frame

Video Interview with Visionary Sculptor/Filmmaker John Frame

The California sculptor comes to town on Sunday to talk about creating his fantastical exhibition at the Portland Art Museum.

Email

The Rothko exhibit may be getting most the press, but upstairs at the Portland Art Museum is an equally spectacular exhibit, albeit of a different world entirely. Inspired by a dream, the California-based sculptor and filmmaker John Frame, who’s had retrospectives at the likes of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, created a dark, whimsical world unto his own, where sculpted characters blend human parts with animal and machine. Slowly, he’s bringing the characters to life in a stop motion animated film, playing sculptor, cinematographer, set designer, and composer. It’s an exhibition not to be missed, particularly if you’re a fan of Tim Burton, DreamWorks, LAIKA, Fantastic Mr. Fox, or the like.

Frame will be in town for a sold-out behind-the-scenes tour on Saturday, March 17 and a not-yet-sold-out talk on Sunday, March 18.

Frame walked me around the exhibit before it opened to talk about the world he’s created and his experience jumping from sculpture to stop-motion animation. I’ve paired his interview with photos of his sculptures and excerpts from his film.

Horning’s Hideout: Luscious woods. Serene pond. Roaming peacocks.
But last Saturday was no bible camp, dudes; it was Fire In The Canyon, a hiphop-heavy, family-friendly music festival. For the smallish crowd that assembled, the scenic setting brought an air of discovery, which was quickly filled with the boom of underground hip hop. Eddie Vallant brought the beat via a live band, while several solo MC’s used a combo of recorded mix/live vox. Sapient and Half Man Half worked their lyrical wiles over laptop beats and DJ scratches, Busdriver spazzed the stage, wowed the crowd, and outrageously twisted the knobs on his music console, and Connecticut’s Ceschi got down in the dirt in front of the main stage and worked the circle of onlookers into a folked-up frenzy:

Have you heard the one about the one-man band?
The one-man band?
The one-man band?
Have you heard the one about the one-man band?
I heard he cried like a baby when he hung.

The current incarnation of Portland’s School Of Rock played what I like to think of as their ‘pump up the jam’ set, energetically recreating funky pop classics like “Groove Is In The Heart” and “Bust A Move”, all the while changing instruments and making yours truly feel that his childhood between the ages of eight and eighteen was not nearly rad enough.

Meanwhile, an update from the local metal front: Witch Mountain’s drummer doesn’t take his shirt off—he doesn’t even bother putting one on in the first place. His band’s glorious riff attack doesn’t even need a minute to get from 0-60. I can respect that. Delta Brave filled the grounds surrounding the main stage with chunks of fun, singable pop, and I barely caught a glimpse of Cooked & the Raw’s jangly, drinkable-sounding tunes, and Sexbot’s the-name-pretty-much-says-it-all music lingerie show. Dang, they both seemed really nice—but there’s always next year.

The event also featured some great masters of ceremony between acts. Fogatron’s world-class beat-boxing warmed my heart, while the hilarious Vera Mysteria staggered and slinked around stage in a heavily permed wig, little white socks, big cat-print slippers, and a pink fifth-trimester mumu. Meanwhile, the second stage’s FM-morning-guy-style MC promoted Mercy Corps raffle tickets thusly: “you can show your beautiful girlfriend you care about starving children in Africa, and sh*t.” Nice.

I also ate a good sandwich, played a set on the main stage, drank several excellent pale ales courtesy of Portland’s new Two Kilts Brewery, posed with my homie Cars & Trains for a ‘Myface’ profile pic (above), then co-piloted a golf cart filled to the brim with my music gear over the hills, between the peacocks, and far away.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Jon Ragel has modestly glossed over his own contributions to the fest, but they probably looked a little something like this:

Rock on, Mr. Ragel.

Monday Fun: Hedwig

Email

This past Saturday, while bluegrass bloomed at Pickathon and Fire in the Canyon ignited Horning’s Hideout, one John Cameron Mitchell kept Portland proper rocking with a DJ/dance party at Mississippi Studios. Hence, we dedicate our Monday Fun to Hedwig, Mitchell’s alter-ego.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who’ve seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and those who should. The 1998 musical/2001 film centers around a blonde German drag-queen debutante—but whether or not that’s your “thing,” the story has a wealth to offer. Immigrant politics, mentor/protegee tension, the nature of public identity, and even The Origin of Love are covered, while wickedly catchy rock opera tunes (like this one) command audiences to sing along.

Ever since I first saw this movie in theaters, I’ve been waiting for Rocky Horror to cede its midnight tranny sing-along tiara. Hedwig begs for the kind of repeat screenings and cultish party scene that Horror has long held, and we suspect that its popularity, more than an appetite for dance DJ’s, is what packed Mississippi Studios on Saturday. Happy Monday! Put on your makeup.

Monday Fun: Red Fang

Meet your local metal.

Email

Armed with a furniture-flattening onslaught of bar chords and a punishing attack of drums, late-blooming local heshers Red Fang are staging a 2011 summer takeover of Godsmack and Megadeth on the metal juggernaut “Rock Star Mayhem Tour.”

But when the Red Fang boys really wanna wreck stuff, they use a secret weapon: video producer and Jackass alumnus Rob “Whitey” McConnaughy. Their first McConnaughy collab, Prehistoric Dog, trades heavily on the cheapo cred of PBR, as well as a near-universal urge to heckle fantasy role-players (“Hey Gandalf: Nice dress!”) This frivolity, in our opinion, makes it great fodder for Monday Fun.

The group released its second McConnaghy video, Wires, on the 12th to help promote its latest record, Murder the Mountains —which it incidentally recorded with the Decemberists’ Chris Funk. As you watch Wires , contemplate:
~ the groundbreaking vision of original watermelon-smasher Gallagher
~ the “budget crunch” that plagues even the most decadent rock videos these days
~ how the calcium in milk and the whole grains in beer make for a balanced diet
~ the unique creative paradise of Portland, where metal lions, chamber-folk lambs, and skate-punk jackasses, can all peacefully coexist.

Happy Monday.

Music Videos: Thao + Mirah | Reggie Watts | Kasey Anderson

Email

Over the weekend, Northwest-based Reggie Watts made Vimeo Picks with this display of his virtuosic one-man-band stylings. As we face the week, Bretheren, let us all take inspiration from Watts’ coordination and wherewithal.

But maybe the coffee has yet to kick in, and the current cloud-cover (or your week’s to-do list) is putting you in the mood for drearier fare. Enter local long-timer Kasey Anderson. The following video combines Anderson’s single, The Wrong Light, with drawings by Portland illustrator Keith Carter. It’s probably no accident that a song that growls, “…Go down…. Let the wrong light in,” is paired with an endlessly left-panning panorama, likely referencing the classic western lore which equates the “left path” with rebellion and depravity. Rarrrr.

Indie-folk rocker Thao Nguyen (of “Get Down Stay Down” fame) and PDX-pat Mirah (who, like Cher, only needs one name) will be at the Wonder Ballroom on Mothers’ Day, celebrating their latest Kill Rock Stars collaboration. Preview their efforts here via video.

Missed Filmed By Bike? Watch Consolation Vids!

Email

Amid the many joys of Portland culture coverage, we have but one lament: we can’t be everywhere. Though we listed it in our events calendar, we didn’t make it out to this weekend’s Filmed By Bike. Sorry sorry sorry. However, we were relieved (and you might be, too) to learn that the festival website features a movie gallery where you can watch some of the previous fests’ tightest shorts (HA! Sorry) on your own time. In the spirit of Monday fun, we’ve nabbed two music videos that celebrate the steel steed.

This one features possibly the first rap solo ever to invite honies to hop on a tandem.

And this LCD Soundsystem video brilliantly documents Portland’s bike punk scene and its distinctive Mad Max/Tank Girl style. Culturephile can personally certify these people as Portlanders, having seen at least 8 of their faces around town.

Here, the scarf-swathed, blue-eyed maestro explains his overarching musical philosophy, as well as his growing affection for a certain windup toy duck. Soul’d Out Festival Video Roundup

Hip-hop down memory lane with the fest’s biggest names.

Email

Good morning, and happy Monday from Rapper Ice Cube. Culturephile brings you this past-blast in honor of the artist’s upcoming gig at the Roseland —and we’ve even courteously culled the web for the swear-free MTV version. Now, Cube probably defines a “good day” a little differently than regular Culturephile readers, but whether you’re in the ’hood or at your office “cube,” we can probably all agree that things go smoother when you put away your A.K.!

Now then. Thirteen years ago, long before Esperanza Spalding ’s unexpected Grammy grab, back when the music industry and the New York skyline still seemed unshakable, another gorgeous afro-and-haltar-top-sporting twentysomething won Best New Artist for her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This weekend Ms. Hill will headline at the Schnitz, so if you need it, take a moment to refresh your memory:

Mos Def raps, battles, acts, and sings. He kicks it with cult comedian Dave Chapelle and eccentric actor/prankster Joaquin Pheonix. He can be cocky or humble, bold or subtle. He’s basically all over the place, which is why this video seems so apropos, showing a studio full of multiple Mos’s. Which one will show up at the Roseland on the 16th? Who knows.

Henry Rollins at Alberta Rose

Email

In his 1980’s rock diary Get On The Bus, Henry Rollins wrote of ordering entire pots of diner coffee for just himself, and performing countless sit-ups while sleeping on the floor of a garden shed in order to tone his famed muscular frame. More than 20 years later, the former Black Flag frontman is still a punk-rock straight-edge Spartan, but he’s segued gradually from rock into talk, becoming one of the most dynamic voices on the spoken-word stage. It probably goes without saying that Rollins has tons of cred and great energy, but he’s also got a rare ability to segue between humor and humanitarianism. But whether he’s expressing sympathy, humor, or anger, he’s always intense.

Next Tuesday, Rollins will be pacing the floor and speaking his mind at Alberta Rose Theater, but in case you can’t wait ‘til then, here’s a video to tide you over. (If you have any trouble keeping up, try drinking an entire pot of coffee.)

WARNING: SOME ADULT LANGUAGE

Rollins will be at Alberta Rose on April 5. For more about Portland arts events, visit PoMo’s Arts & Entertainment Calendar, stream content with an RSS feed, or sign up for our weekly On The Town Newsletter!
