The title reminds me of the “People’s Republic of Cambridge” for some reason. That fierce sense of individualism of a certain sect of people. In some ways this is what I am attempting to contribute, participate in the larger (or smaller as it would be) dialogue with ‘SQFT’ (now in Boise after having shown in Portland). The small show includes 56 artists from all over the Pacific Northwest who have already started to splinter since its inception. One artist moved from Eugene to Los Angeles, one each moved from Portland to Boston, Missoula and Las Vegas. So, there is something here about both the transience and the underdog. Second cities, smaller demographics – finally being noticed for what they are worth. Well, not necessarily the place, but moreso those makers who occupy camp there. It’s great to hear this happening. Don’t forget a handful from your hometown!
