Today is Bastille Day, and Francophiles are frolicking. Even so, it’s time to mark your calendar for another trip abroad here in Portland. Starting Saturday July 23, the Portland Japanese Garden puts on its annual art show and sale, Behind the Shoji.
37 artists will be exhibiting and selling their work, ranging from woodcarvings to textiles to handmade ceramics, glass and jewelry. Some have shown at the Garden before, others are new to the sale. All are offering Asian-inspired, original pieces that are functional and/or beautiful.
You may also be inspired by watching the artists work: many will be on-site demonstrating their working methods, at scheduled times throughout the run of the show, weekends in the Garden pavilion. The schedule is online and listed below.
The show is open through September 5. Entrance is free for members or with admission to the garden, which is always worth a trip, any season.

The Garden is located in the west hills of Portland, Oregon, directly above the Rose Gardens in Washington Park.
