BAR PILOT

By John Chandler

John Chandler
About this blog

Bar Pilot navigates from dingy dive bars to ritzy schmooze-and-booze affairs to brain-melting rock shows, and points of interest in between. Chandler will do his utmost to jot down keen observations, hopefully inspire a few barroom arguments, and guide his readers through another night on the rocks.

About the author

In his twenty-plus years as a roving journalist and his forty-plus years as a native Oregonian, Portland Monthly web editor John Chandler has developed an appreciation for a properly stirred cocktail, all manner of beer, smoky single malt scotch, and the odd moment of clarity. “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamed of in your philosophy,” is his pet quote, and he’ll break it out whether the occasion calls for it or not. Rock ‘n’ roll snob, film geek, and cultural kibitzer, Chandler can usually be found perched on a local bar stool muttering to himself about “the good old days” when he was always on the @#$%&!* guest list. Approach with caution.

CULTUREPHILE: PORTLAND ARTS

By Anne Adams

Anne Adams
About this blog

Culturephile chronicles the vibrant world of Portland arts & culture, its movers and makers.

About the author

During her 10 year Portland residency, Anne Adams has contributed to local publications, including Barfly, the Portland Tribune, and Portland Monthly. In 2005 her serial zine, The Bookmark, was endorsed by Wordstock and Powell’s Books.

Anne’s horizons extend beyond pen and page, with an Art Department credit in the movie Coraline, and passionate participation in the indie music community. Anne is an avid arts appreciator who can zero in on a detail of gesture or craft, but cannot suppress a wistful tear when faced with expressions of human truth.

PLANTWISE

By Kate Bryant

Kate Bryant
About this blog

PLANTWISE looks at Portland’s lively gardening culture – and the wide, wide world of plants and how to grow them here.

About the author

Kate Bryant writes about plants and also gets pretty physical with them in her professional gardening work. She particularly enjoys snipping shrubbery into topiary art (although she rarely has the opportunity to do so). Since she fancies herself a bit of a cook, plants she can eat are often on her mind. In terms of favorite plants, current contenders include resinous, sticky plants, plants that resent summer water, and parsley.

THE MUDDY BOOT

By Brian Barker

Brian Barker
About this blog

The Muddy Boot serves as a trusty guide to all things concerning Oregon’s out of doors.

About the author

Brian Barker is an associate editor at Portland Monthly. He has somehow convinced fellow staffers that frequent trips to the Coast, skiing on Mount Hood, and exploring trails in the Gorge are indeed all in a day’s work. If pushed, he’ll fess up to shedding a tear during Ken Burns’ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. He is married to a native Michigander who’s proficient with a bow and arrow. The pair has a newborn son, for whom they’ve already begun eyeing ski lessons.
