'Portlandia' creators and stars, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen

The 2014 Emmy nominations cement Portlandia's place among the current crop of TV comedy greats. In 2011, Portlandia won an Emmy for Oustanding Costumes for a Variety Program or Special, but this year the IFC show has been nominated in six categories, including writing, art direction, and guest actor (any surprises on that being Steve Buscemi's role in the "Celery" episode?).

The biggest surprise, though, is that star Fred Armisen scored a nomination for best supporting actor in a comedy series.

Up against names like The Daily Show, Colbert Report, Modern Family, and Saturday Night Live, these Emmy nominations have put Portland's locally sourced and sustainably caught salmon in the same pool as  genetically altered, corporate giants. Can we get a little Portland Pride?

Here is the complete list of Portlandia's nominations:

  • Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series: Jonathan Krisel
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Fred Armisen
  • Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series: Steve Buscemi as Marty
  • Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series: Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Krisel, Graham Wagner, Karey Dornetto
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series: Bill Benz and Daniel Gray Longino
  • Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Nonfiction, Reality, or Reality-Competition Program: Katerine Isom, set decorator; Tyler Robinson, production designer; Schuyler Telleen, art director

HBO's Girls is also up for two Emmys, including best lead actress for Lena Dunham. This fall, Dunham will tour in support of her book of personal essays, Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned. Her Portland stop on October 19 at the Newmark Theatre will include a discussion with, you guessed it, Portlandia star and punk rock doyenne Carrie Brownstein. It'll be Girls meets Riot Grrrls, and tickets went on sale today.
