PETER LOWRY
(Midfielder/Forward)
PREVIOUS TEAM Chicago Fire
Lowry spent his pre-season exploring Portland—with ample Twitter help from fans.
QUOTE “We’re constantly hungry. I can go on Twitter, ask for recommendations, and get 20 places. I immersed myself in Chicago, and I want to do the same here.”

DARLINGTON NAGBE
(Forward/Midfielder)
PREVIOUS TEAM University of Akron
The 20-year-old was considered the top college prospect in the MLS SuperDraft.
QUOTE “In college, everyone talked about wanting to go to a pro team where they could contribute. My goal for the season is to be on the field as much as possible.”

DAVID HORST
(Defender)
PREVIOUS TEAM Real Salt Lake
The towering defender played with the 2009 MLS Cup champs.
QUOTE “Salt Lake is pretty conservative. ‘Keep Portland Weird’ is what I keep seeing. I’ve seen some interesting things out there already. It keeps me on my toes.”

JEREMY HALL
(Defender/Midfielder)
PREVIOUS TEAM New York Red Bulls
This versatile and experienced player can deploy on defense and on offense.
QUOTE “I came out to play the Timbers in ’09. I’ll never forget this: they had a free kick, and the next thing you know, you hear this chainsaw. I was like, ‘What is going on?’”

RYAN PORE
(Midfielder)
PREVIOUS TEAM Portland Timbers
One of eight returning Timbers players, Pore scored 15 goals for last year’s squad.
QUOTE “I went to the Cheerful Tortoise to watch the MLS draft with a few fans. Not a big deal, but I spent four years playing in Kansas City, and that sort of thing never happened.”

TROY PERKINS
(Goalkeeper)
PREVIOUS TEAM DC United
With nine years of pro experience, Perkins could help mold a young, formative team.
QUOTE “It’s odd, at 29, to be the second-oldest guy on the team. But I’m impressed—you can already tell someone something to make things better. We know it’s not personal.”

THE TIMBERS’ NEW ROSTER combines hot rookie prospects, MLS veterans, and foreign imports in a potentially potent—but completely untested—squad. Here are some players to watch for, and a look at challenges they’ll face as the team’s demanding nine-month debut season unfolds.

Goal
The 2006 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Troy Perkins hopes to prove he’s still got it after a less-than-stellar year with woeful DC United.

Defense
Arguably the most experienced part of the roster. Jeremy Hall joins Kerrea Gilbert, formerly of London’s famed Arsenal; other MLS vets; and promising college players.

Midfield
Creativity and toughness here will be critical to success. Highly touted Darlington Nagbe can play here, but it’s unclear who the go-to man in the middle will be.

Forward
Kenny Cooper, the Timbers’ most-heralded off-season signing, scored 40 MLS goals earlier in his career, but suffered an injury-riddled stint in Germany. The club’s chasing more strikers. Nagbe and other midfielders pose attacking threats.
