On Aug 9 Start Making a Reader Today, a nonprofit that provides literacy support for Oregon’s schoolchildren, hosted its fifth annual gala fundraiser. Held atop the Pearl District’s SmartPark at Station Place, this year’s soiree attracted some 125 supporters and brought to life its “Samba at Sunset” theme by offering up panoramic city views, sangria, and a barrage of Brazilian-themed beats from the 40-piece Lions of Batucada band. Best of all, the fun-filled evening drummed up a record-breaking $56,000 for SMART.
