Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a big week for dance.
Polaris will present REPO, a sort of greatest-hits retrospective of the company’s work since 2002, interspersed with previews of its latest forays. Here, the company rehearses for the redux:
Meanwhile, oft-besocked modern movement pioneers at Northwest Dance Project are sprucing up their holiday offering, Cool Yule, for its debut next week, supported by the live jazz stylings of Blue Cranes.
And that’s just the small avant-garde guys; of course the tutu brigade is also advancing from all flanks. This week, OBT presents its annual classic The Nutcracker, getting a running head start on Portland Festival Ballet, whose Nutcracker next week should pique special interest. That production will debut John Magnus, the company’s new artistic director from the world-renowned Joffrey Ballet—and folks, according to our dance sources, the Joffrey Ballet does not mess around. PFB’s new production, they say, might nip a bit at OBT’s satin heels. Never mind; OBT is doubling down with Christmas-song-accompanied lounge-style program, A Holiday Revue, featuring Susannah Mars—whose golden pipes should already be well-warmed from her headlining gig with Artist Rep’s Mars On Life—Live.
