Q: What is it like being a Realtor in today’s market?
A: This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
— William Shakespeare
As a professional Realtor for nearly 10 years I have had experiences with many different sort of people in my dealings. I’ve had people ask me to intentionally withhold information and conceal the truth of matters. I’ve talked with people within my profession who claim to do whatever it takes to get a listing or the sale and damn the rest. I’ve experienced expert agents in neighborhoods who can single handedly change values because it’s easier to sell homes cheap then to get the highest and the best price as is our fiduciary duty. In most every instance these people have one thing in common when making their decisions. Fear.
It’s difficult to imagine what would happen if people started to behave if everyone else had to follow by example. The idea here is that you should act in such a way that your act would form the basis for a consistent moral principle that everyone would follow -The Ethical Theory of Immanuel Kant. How many times have you not let someone in on the freeway only because you didn’t want another person in front of you? In theory this sounds reasonable to make decisions based on a moral principal that is guided by being true to yourself. However, when people are only looking out after themselves when making decisions based on fear then their integrity is compromised.
In my life I have set goals in business and in life and oddly enough the two go together hand in hand. Being true to yourself so that you also feel good about how you treat others is a basic principal to success. It is my hope that after reading this, people may take a moment to think about what the right thing to do would be. To not engage in a campaign of fear and mis-information so that they only benefit themselves and not the greater good. Think about the last time someone lied to you and ask yourself how did that feel and do you want to continue perpetuating that feeling. We only have one life to live and I imagine a happy life for all by being true to thine self.
