Seasonal Asparagus

My biggest beef with Portland happy hours has to do with portion-size trickery. To those establishments who offer a half-size happy-hour portion for two dollars off the original price, know this: you’re not fooling anyone. We pay our bills, we talk amongst ourselves, and we don’t come back. At least not for happy hour.

This brings us to Vindalho (2038 SE Clinton St, 503-467-4550). The Indian eatery serves full portions of its appetizers for five bucks or less during its daily happy-hour feast. This equates to a pile of onion rings with tomato chutney, no less than ten chicken wings with tamarind-yogurt dipping sauce, a heaping mound of Vindalho’s signature mussels in a bath of chile-spiked coconut curry, and enough asparagus stir-fried in garam masala with caramelized onions for two.

Drinks also impress. The tart Rhubarb Raj isn’t something I’d normally order, but the blend of rhubarb purée, lime-infused vodka, simple syrup, and mint definitely delights. And who can find fault with five-dollar glass pours of house wine and discounted pints of Hopworks organic lager or Double Mountain IPA? Certainly not I.

Vindalho features happy hour from Tuesday through Sunday, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and a late-night installment on Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Happy hour is available only in the bar.
