It's the same every year: summer fades into fall, clouds gather, temperatures drop, daylight hours shrink, and outdoor exercise becomes considerably less appealing. Luckily for us fair-weather folk, studios and retails stores throughout the city have begun offering public fitness classes, ranging from pilates to power yoga.

These complimentary classes will keep you active (and warm!) all season long without straining your budget:

• Looks like Athleta offers far more than women’s activewear: the retail store hosts a continually changing selection of free fitness classes. August offerings included barre3, trail runs, sport conditioning, and an urban bike ride, and September’s calendar will celebrate National Yoga Month with a variety of classes led by YoYoYogi instructors. 1001 NW Couch St; stores.athleta.net

• Confluence Clinic’s Erin Moline recently began leading free Strala Yoga classes at Be Space. Moline studied with Strala creator Tara Stiles in NYC, and is excited to introduce the movement style to Portlanders. Classes are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $5. “Basics” classes are held

• CorePower Yoga offers a free beginning power yoga class at both of its Portland locations. The SE studio teaches the class on Fridays at 1:30 pm, while the NW studio offers it on Sundays at 10:30 am. • LuluLemon, like Athleta, offers its athletic apparel with a side of complimentary athletic classes. The current schedule features weekly Sunday morning classes led by instructors from Shakti House. September’s offerings include Intro to Ashtanga Yoga, YogaWorks, Kundalini and Gong Yoga, Yin/Restorative Yoga, and pilates. The store also organizes community runs on Tuesdays at 6 pm; the runs range from 3 to 5 miles at a casual pace. 1231 NW Couch St; lululemon.com

• Not to be left out, Patagonia Portland also offers free yoga classes at its retail location in the Pearl District. The store currently hosts weekly yoga classes on Wednesdays at 7 PM.  907 NW Irving St; facebook.com/PatagoniaPortland

• Team Quest MMA lacks a free weekly deal, but it does offer a free 30-day trial, which includes classes in kickboxing, mixed martial arts, submission wrestling, fitquest, jiu jitsu, cardio bag class, and more. • Last but not least, Yoga Union offers multiple free/donation classes throughout the week, including a half-hour group meditation and an hour-long Yoga Basics.
