Schoolhouse Electric's Crafty Spring Line
The acclaimed local/national design powerhouse hits nostalgic, hand-hewn notes for the season.
Portland's Schoolhouse Electric can always be counted on for sumptuous seasonal lookbooks and Americana-drenched design moves that make you want to refashion your life into a Wes Anderson-esque fantasia of intellectual pursuits and leisurely (but productive!) coffee-drinking.
So it is with the brand's just-launched spring collection, which fine-tunes the retro vibe Schoolhouse established over the last couple years since its transformation from a lighting company into a full-fledged lifestyle enterprise. "This collection isn't really on a theme," says merchandising and co-creative director Sarah Culbertson. "It's more about giving people inspiration to add something fresh and new for spring—to brighten up a room. It doesn't have to be a whole makeover. It can be about adding pops of color to a space. In general, people are really embracing color right now.
The collection also features evocative collaborations with Egg Press, a local jump-rope manufacturer (!), and, for the second season, visual artists. "That's still new for us," Culbertson says. "It's a great challenge. We need to find artists whose individual visions we really like and support, but who can simultaneously create something true to themselves and true to our brand."
