The first spring blossoms might seem a long ways off in these grey days of January, so do yourself a favor and add some freshness to your plate for that extra boost of Vitamin D to see you through to June.
While our neighbors to the east buckle down for the Polar Vortex with nothing but preserved or trucked-in produce, we Oregonians enjoy an abundance of fresh, local food year round.
Crops might grow slowly in these dark days of winter but, thanks to our mild maritime climate, many farmers and producers keep the harvest coming. Between the array of shitake and winter chanterelle mushrooms, Dungeness crab, ultra-sweet carrots and parsnips, not to mention delicious ready-to-eat and preserved products, there are plenty of reasons to stop by one of these winter farmer’s markets.

Every winter, the Portland Farmer’s Market downsizes it’s nine markets to one solid winter market. Now in its third season, shoppers can check out over 35 vendors such like Chop, Deck Family Farm, Gathering Together, Kiyokawa Family Orchards, Tails and Trotters, and Two Tarts Bakery. Patrons can browse market stands and duck out of the rain in the covered seating area in inclement weather at this urban market on the South Park blocks.
Hillsdale Farmer’s Market 1509 SW Sunset Blvd in the Wilson High parking lot
Held every other Sunday Jan 19th thru April 27th, 10-2 pm.
This year round market in Southwest Portland boasts fresh produce, meat, seafood, along with bagels, pizza, and other vendor treats. With plenty of parking, load up a weekly dose of produce from Anthony Boutard at Ayers Creek Farms or check out the super local organic vegetables from Sauvie Island Organics or one of the dozens of vendors at this serious market.
Hollywood Farmer’s Market 4420 NE Hancock St
Winter markets held the 1st and 3rd Saturdays December thru April, 9–1pm.
Enjoy the brisk, sunny days of winter at this neighborhood farmer’s market that includes over 19 vendors and live music thru the winter, including the expansive biodynamic Winter Green Farm, Deck Family Farm, and innovative organic Persephone Farm.
Lloyd Farmer’s Market 800 NE Holladay St
Held every Tuesday from 10–2 pm.
Grab some healthy fare on your lunch break at this mid–week, year round farmer’s market in the heart of the Lloyd District. Operated under the cover of a large gazebo, it’s a pleasant market to shop even while it’s raining. Enjoy sweet, overwintered carrots and produce from Greenville Farms and other vendors. People’s Farmer’s Market 3029 SE 21st Ave
Every Wednesday from 2–7 pm.
The only mid–week evening market, the People’s Farmer’s Market has hosting their year round market since before it was cool. You can use your debit, EBT, or credit card at this accessable market hosted just outside the People’s Coop grocery store. Check their website for a weekly roundup of what’s fresh, along with up to date vendor information.
