New Brunch Alert: Radar on Mississippi
Stop into this chic North Portland spot for Swedish pancakes, baked eggs, and a side of family history.
This just in: North Mississippi's Radar now features an a.m. menu that should, ahem, be on your own radar. The stylish 36-seat neighborhood restaurant—which debuted in December 2012, specializing in seasonal small plates and original cocktails—launched weekend brunch service this week, offering Scandinavian specialties alongside American breakfast staples.
Owned by husband-and-wife team Jonathan Berube and Lily Tollefsen, Radar sits pretty in the former North Portland BikeWorks space outfitted with brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling, a curving aluminum bar flanked by baby blue metal stools, and plenty of cozy two-tops for one-on-one dining. The restaurant is named for Tollefson's father, Skip Radar Tollefson, a Long Island-based restaurateur and artist. Be sure to check out the epic ship-and-sea painting at the back of the eatery, a Skip Radar Tollefson original.
On the menu? Swedish pancakes with huckleberries, creamy baked eggs with kale and pickled onions alongside a bowl of extra-crispy fried potatoes, a smoked bluefish plate with hardboiled eggs and house pickles, country ham with Red Eye Gravy, latkes with apples, and much more. There are plenty of options on the menu to please a wide variety of brunchers, so don't be surprised if this charming spot beings to lure in loyal Gravy line jockeys to its own satisfying Mississippi-area brunch...without the wait.
Don't just take my word for it: Broder's Peter Bro, who reportedly eyed the space for a North Portland outpost of his signature Scandinavian eatery, is also an early fan of the Radar team. Given his own success filling out lengthy brunch waiting lists, his strong encouragement of Radar's foray into morning menus should speak volumes.
Brunch is available Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Radar's evening menus are offered Tuesday through Sunday from 5 pm to 10 pm.
