Inside Vegan Indian Eatery the Sudra
The Ocean's newest eatery serves an Indian fusion menu of veggie-based pakora, masala, dosa, chutney, cocktails, and more.
Hungry for new flavors? Head for The Sudra, the vegan Indian fusion restaurant you didn't know you were waiting for.
The Sudra's Sanjay Chandrasekaran, who also owns downtown vegan food cart Sonny Bowl, said the new eatery was born out of a desire for a different style of Indian food: less grains and potatoes, more fresh produce and wholesome, unprocessed dishes.
The menu is organized into a list of small ($9) and large ($12) plates, each of which feature a different main dish and a number of sides and sauces. The Pakora Plate, for instance, includes pickled broccoli and cauliflower pakora, anasazi bean curry, kale in tahini dressing, blueberry-mint chutney, cilantro-lemon sauce, radish, and brown basmati rice. (The large plates are more like serving platters, and may at first look like far too much food, but don't be surprised if you find yourself chasing that last bite of rice around the plate.)
Squeezed between Slowburger and Uno Mas in NE Glisan's micro-restaurant row, The Sudra occupies the space formerly home to Korean chicken wing joint Basa Basa.
"Finally, some vegan food in this meat market!" exclaimed one grateful customer. Indeed, The Sudra's focus on veggies and legumes contrasts with neighbors 24 & Meatballs and Tails & Trotters. But don't let the v-word scare you away—the menu includes universal staples like flatbreads, rice, beer, and cocktails.
The cocktail menu features brightly-hued specialty drinks like the Beet Tequila (tequila, cilantro, garam masala, beet juice and grapefruit juice, $8), and the crew hopes to soon add hot toddies made from loose leaf tea-infused bourbon. A happy hour menu (4-7 pm, Monday through Friday) features smaller $5 portions of the dinner plates, allowing curious patrons to sample a bit of everything.
The Sudra is open from 11 am to 11 pm on Sunday through Thursday, and 11 am to 12 am on Friday and Saturday. Check out our slide show of the new space by clicking the photo below:
