Q: Last month you talked about brewpubs in the SW Portland area. What are your favorite Beervana locations in the rest of Washington County?A: There are many options when it comes to great beer throughout Washington County. In addition to many McMenamin’s sites scattered throughout the area, there are also several other pubs and brewpubs including Fanno Creek Brew Pub in Tigard and The Raccoon Lodge and Brewpub in Raleigh Hills. Additionally, there are many restaurants that serve the local brews as well as great beers from across the U.S. and the world.
I recently visited Fanno Creek Brew Pub in Tigard for the first time. I had previously tried their Vanilla Porter at Henry’s Tavern in downtown Portland, but was curious about their pub and the rest of their beers. Their pub is quite rustic indoors, and they have a small outdoor seating area in front of the pub when the weather allows. The food is very tasty and they have a good selection for both lunch and dinner times. But, the real treat is the beer selection – 8-10 beers on tap at a time! I have since been back several times – including one beautiful Sunday evening where I was able to enjoy a great beer while sitting outside with my chocolate Labrador.
McMenamin’s is a staple in Washington County just as it is in Southwest Portland. If you love music and beer, you will be able to find both almost any day of the week at the various locations throughout the area. When I used to live a bit closer, one of my favorite locations was Rock Creek Tavern on Old Cornelius Pass Road in Hillsboro. For those unfamiliar with this pub, it has been rebuilt after the original building burned to the ground in 2002. Their tap list is not as extensive as some of the other locations (they have 5 currently on tap), but they have live music almost every evening. My new local McMenamin’s is Cedar Hills. I especially like the fact they have an outdoor seating area so that I can stop by for a beer while walking my dog.The Raccoon Lodge and Brewpub was mentioned last month, but definitely deserves another mention. Their onsite brewery is Cascade Brewing Company which was established in 1998. They usually have 8-10 beers on tap at any one time plus they serve imperial pints (20 ounces rather than the typical 16-ounce pint seen in many establishments). My favorites are the Celtic Copper Ale and India Pale Ale. They also have a beer garden that will be opening soon. I am looking forward to bringing my dog here as well once the weather improves.
Please let me know your favorite locations and beers. I am always open to trying new brews. After all, we live in Beervana!
